tonythecat
Hi Guys,Is there a simple, foolproof way of determining what type of fluid is in my braking system. The brakes were totally re-built some years ago and alas the PO who did the work cannot remember if he used silicone?. It has been in for over 20,000 miles and I have never had to disturb or bleed the system? HELPTony Morgan '54 DHC
RogerH
Hi Tony, if it is purple then it is 'probably' silicone DOT5 If it is amber then it is 'probably' DT3 or 5 or 5.1 The fool proof way is - Put some of the fluid in a class jar (table spoon or more) add half the amount of water. If it mixes then it is DOT3 or 4 or 5.1 If it does not mix then it is silcone DOT5 Roger
stuart
DOT 5.1 hardly mixes with water if you read its spec. Stuart.
ctc77965o
Agree with Stuart: put a drip of fluid into a bowl of water, if it doesn't 'disappear' then it's silicone DOT5, if it goes milky and then dissolves then it's glycol dot 3/4/5.
