Hi Miles.

Here is my current wiring diagram. the relays can be found bottom left.

Wiring diagram TR OFU 198v4.pdf

You will find conveniently a thick brown / green wire connected to the horns left & right side of the car. This is a permanant (fused) feed which I used also to power the headlamps via the relay contacts. The standard blue / red, & blue / white wires from the dip switch were used to trigger the relays.

My driver '250 with its factory wiring loom has 55/100W halogen bulbs in its Lucas headlights, since the last century. I wouldn't try these in a repro loom as the wire gauge is smaller.

The light is comparable to modern on high beam, and plenty good on low. However, due to the prevalence of deer on secondary roads at night I seldom venture out on these at night any more, and limited access highways ( Interstate over here ) don't allow much high beam use due to traffic.

Cheers,

Tom

It is if you use this wiring diagram rather than the one they supply .

I have sealed beam units and since I fitted relays the power/light output has been fine. The relay kit was from Moss but looking at fitting original Lucas 6RA type relays. I have a selection of working 6RA's that I plan to wire through traditional TR fuse boxes. Yes I know it is a bit retro but so is the car.

Hi Hamish,

if you go for the Revington Logic box do not forget the momentary switch.

You will need to remove the existing OD column switch and fit the new one.

I modified mine a little further and have it as a press button on the end of the original extended arm.

Not applicable on TR3a as its a different type of switch so he would need a toggle momentary switch instead

Thanks for looking out for me.

I have bought one of these ready for when I take the plunge. Hope it’s the right one !!

at the moment I have a very ordinary dash mounted switch adjacent to steering wheel that I will swap out with this one

Off(On) Momentary Toggle Switch Car Dashboard Dash SPST 12V https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F281916779102

As an electrical aside I have bought a red and yellow ones of this light. To replace broken ign and flasher dash warning lights.

Again I hope these work. Right size for the dash holes st least.

TBH you want a longer stalk type as then its relatively easy reach from the wheel like this https://www.revingtontr.com/product/rtr8436/name/switch-sprung-off-momon-40mm-arm

Hi Stuart

the one I have at the moment sits on the dash on the right just under the steering wheel rim (thick rimmed mora lita) and is like this

https://www.morrisminor.org.uk/parts/59-switches-regulators-fusebox/3440-switch-on-off-toggle-lucas?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwaec3Mbq3QIVBpztCh3YkwEqEAQYDSABEgIiIfD_BwE

i can operate it with hand on the wheel ok.

But it first I need to get the gearbox back in the car !!!

and test it all out after up grade refurb.

The logic box may be a birthday present to me from me next month.

I wonder if anyone has had experience of running with these LED bulbs https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/collections/12-volt-collection/products/latest-led-headlights-p45t. I am contemplating buying new P700 (repro) headlamp units to replace my existing headlamps as the glass has gone a bit opaque. I am running on a dynamo which I would like to keep and I assume that relays would not be necessary for led's. However I am no auto electrician and don't really want to mess with the wiring.

They are the bulbs I am using (I see the price has dropped a bit)  I have them mounted in a pair of Ciebi / Valeo headlamp units, & the results are extreemly good.

I have previously tried the repro P700 tripod units (with H4 Halogen bulbs) & was not impressed, They seemed very good at illuminating the tree tops when on full beam.

Thanks Bob

I seem to recall you saying that about the P700s elsewhere but couldn't find it. The price is very attractive at around £45 per pair but I don't want to waste my money. I assume you tried adjusting them lower. Can't seem to find the Cibie's online but maybe I'm looking for the wrong ones

Would these be the right ones? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Valeo-082440-Front-Headlights/dp/B008DQV88Q.

Also, do I need relays when using LEDs?

I've noticed that the led bulbs in my sitting room seem to cast less shadows than the previous standard bulbs so I wonder if they would be better than the H4 halogen bulbs in the P700s or am I just being a cheapskate? I like the look of the tripods on an early 60s car, I must admit

No Andy, I am afraid not, these are right hand dip for Continental use. A great pity since very keen price! You need Valeo part number 082441 for RHD (left hand dip).

It seems that the 82441 have been discontinued. Speaking to suppliers on the web.  You can get a version with sidelights incorporated (not sure of code but demon tweeks sell them) but not  a version without sidelights.  On another thread Bob (Lebro) suggested checking on ebay and I did find one there secondhand.
