New on this forum / question about wings

As a newbe on this forum and at the start of a new project (64 TR4, ex Arizona) I have a question about front wings. The project car Ive bought seems to be rather rust free. Time will tell if Im right.... only the front wings at some point have been replaced by polyester/plastic ones. As Im looking for a high standard close to concours (but still drivable) restoration Im in doubt what to do with the front wings:

1. Keep the polyester ones

2. Replace by original used wings (where to find those)

3. Replace by aftermarket reproductions (what are the best ones)

Do the reproductions currently available on the market indeed have a poor fitting quality?

Any input will be highly appreciated. Will keep you posted as for the progress of my project that will commence after I have completed the restoration of a 71 Mini Innocenti which is close to completion.

If you want original wings try “The Flyingenglishmen” on EBay. The owner, Mark, is a straight genuine chap, he restores TRs as well as selling TR parts.

The best (in my opinion) reproduction outer wings are from Bastuck, they fit amazingly!!!

It looks like a 4A wing to me , complete with holes for the light and a second hole further back ( what's that for ? ). It would need work

but looks to be basically sound for the greater part.

Personal collection Wolverhampton , not sure where in the Country you are Inno71.

Welcome to the Forum by the way from a 1965 ex USA TR4 owner.

Restoration is always about the standard you want to achieve, the use to which the car will be put, your skills, experience , available time and not least how much money !

It sounds as though you have some experience " under your belt " with your Mini. The metal's a bit thicker on a TR.

Do join the Register and get yourself along to the local Group meetings ( lots of brains to pick for free ).

The eBay wing is being sold by Mark Johnson, whom I know well.

 

Mark is ‘flyingenglishmen’.

 

Mark bought a large number of panels from me, amongst a lot of other parts.

 

I still have a number of original Stanpart panels left available for sale. All will need repair.

 

I am located in Warwickshire, fairly close to the motor museum at Gaydon.

 

I plan on having a couple of open days before too much longer.

To answer the question you posed, you really will need to replace the fibreglass wings with steel ones if you want to build a top quality car - any discerning future purchaser would probably walk away from a car with fibreglass wings, and in my opinion, it will devalue the overall car.

 

Personally I would happily use new Bastuck panels as they have earned a good reputation for fitting well, although as Stewart has pointed out, they are of a slightly thinner gauge metal. They are not cheap!

 

They will be less expensive than original old stock Stanpart wings which will cost an arm and a leg if you can find some, but bear in mind that many Stanpart panels sold into the spares market were often rejects from the production line in the factory, hence there is no guarantee that they will fit well straight out of the box in any event!

 

There is a steady supply of second hand wings around which are obviously a much cheaper option, but typically they will need some fettling/repair - if this isn't your cup of tea, a reasonably competent body man should be able to sort them out and there are various repair panels available which can help, albeit expensive for what they are.

 

As David mentioned earlier, Mark Johnson ( aka Flying Englishman) is often advertising refurbished wings for sale at reasonable prices, albeit I think he likes to part exchange them, and that is certainly worth pursuing - I notice Conrad chipped in that he had some, so certainly worth contacting him or taking up David on his open day sale.
