Recommended Posts

Hi All.

I have a friend who is putting a V8 in a car and is wondering if it's possible to mount it to a triumph box, just wondering if anyone has any answers ?

Cheers Mark.

Hi, the easiest option is as per the TR8 / TR7V8 conversions.

The 2WD LT77 5 speed gearbox as found in the TR7 / Rover SD1 and various other BL derivatives will bolt on to any Rover V8 using the appropriate bellhousing, flywheel and clutch etc. All the bits are available although the gearboxes may require a search as good ones are becoming scarce. You may need to get one rebuilt. Then there's the R380 box which superseded it.

Apart from that there are various kit car / custom car arrangements to enable the Rover V8 to drop into Fords or other rear wheel drive vehicles. You'll need to google the net for all the options. The gearbox has to be strong enough to cope with the torque.

Hope this helps,

Adam

This used to be a conversion for Stags when their Triumph V8's had been cooked, you need a 'box with the longer Stag input shaft (preferably with all Stag internals), a converting ring that bolts between the 'box and the Rover V8's backplate, a complete clutch with centre plate compatible with the Stag input shaft, and a R.V8 flywheel drilled to take the clutch, there was a time when you could buy all you needed as a complete kit, but long gone now I suspect.

Cheers Rob

HI maybe a bit too late to be of use
Just read an article in waiting room edition of Classic Motoring. Says a company called Vitesse has expanded its MX5 gearbox app for MGB to include GTV8 and RV8, says gear box is 23kg lighter than Austin-Rover 5 speeder and better ratios.

M2P : I seriously doubt that a Stag gearbox will fit in a MGB gearbox tunnel without some panels mods.
