Rear shock absorbers TR3A

Recommended Posts

Most people here would send theirs out for rebuilding rather than replacement. Here's one company many people use in the US: http://www.applehydraulics.com/

But are you sure you need to replace them, John? Those lever action shocks are nearly indestructible. Have you checked fluid levels?

John its also worth talking to Derek, he has 50 years experience of these things, standard/ uprated/ competition etc and will tell you chapter and verse, what will work and what wont in a TR.

Don, thank you for stating the obvious and I mean that gratefully :)

There weren't any damp patches so it didn't occur to me to check the levels of fluid.

There was a lot of topping up to be done ! I'm surprised it didn't show.

It was picked up at the contrôle technique today. I must say it it feels firm now. I'm going to drop by tomorrow to test it on the machine again.

I put a pair of Moss shocks in my TR2. I went close to losing the car when first one then the other shock broke internally on a rough road while I was doing about 80mph. Others here have had similar problems. I couldn't NOT recommend them enough.

Rebuild the old ones.

John, are you familiar with the Parts Quality Initiative here on the Register? A couple of smart and dedicated volunteers run a system of getting detailed feedback from users when a particular part seems to have a quality issue that the supplier hasn't adequately addressed, and they elevate it to see if a satisfactory resolution can be found. Your experience with those dampers sounds scary. And Moss have usually been quite good where a safety issue is involved.

But in case you have something to report, here's the link:

What "broke" ? Surely it would only be the seals giving way ?

Would be interesting to hear from others who have had problems with the Moss product.

Well done, John.

Yeah, in another decade or two you may have to add some more oil... (griin)

Don

I have suspect dampers caused by the noise I hear when we go over sleeping policemen. What grade and type of oil is needed for the top up?

Dave

My shocks are only 56 years old, Dave, so they have yet to need a top-up (smile). But here's a decent writeup. Most decent auto parts stores will have hydraulic jack oil on the shelf.

It'll be good to get the experience of others on this subject, too.

Its very common to hear a. nasty knock from the dampers caused by the damper moving on the brackets. Use good grade bolts and make sure that they are really tight.

This is a good point! Check their tightness, Dave -- probably more "loose" ones out there than "low" ones.

PS You should also reinforce the shocker mounting on the chassis if you got this route.

Don and all

Thanks for the info, now to find out if I have the type that has a raised cast section at the top with the filler screw in, or whether I have the type that has a flat lid held on by 6 screws as shown in the workshop manual, if so, to what level do you fill to?to leave the air space referred to in that write up on an MGA.

I will check to see that they are bolted up tight as well, good point!
