Clutch Grumbling

Morning.

 

With the engine running and car stationary there is a grumbling from the gearbox/clutch.

 

Push the clutch in and the noise stops.

 

Release the clutch and it starts again.

 

I can describe the noise as sounding like rotating metal against metal with a light touch.

 

Any thoughts?

Hi Paul,

the 4A has a self adjusting clutch.

The release bearing is always close to touching (if not actually touching) the rotating clutch diaphragm fingers.

 

If the bearing sounds good when engaged then consider fitting the TR4 return spring (easily done from underneath.

It may give a very slightly longer pedal travel but I doubt you would notice.

Sounds to me that the clutch is just fine, but your gearbox has worn bearings.

As Roger says test would be to pull the bearing away from the fingers either with a spring, of just by hand for a 1 off test.

If the noise stops then it was the clutch, if not ---

P.S.

 

An easier test would be to put light pressure on the clutch pedal - not enough to release it, but enough to make the bearing start to put pressure on the fingers.

If the noise stops then it is just a noisy bearing.

Gearbox Primary Shaft bearing or maybe layshaft bearings...drive it until the whine is unbearable and/or it jumps out of second then rebuild it.

Sorry to appear negative, but I've just had that self same problem on my "4" and it turned out to be the front main bearing!

Geoff - I am thinking the same. It sounds like a bearing to me.

It might also be a slack crankshaft bush. If so it'll go on for ages.
