Tim D.
Hi Chaps, Just had a glorious drive around the southwest at the weekend running in the new engine.. Last time I drove the car any distance was a rally in Essex which included a bit of whack to the underneath over a hump. Afterwards on the way home I noticed a new low frequency vibration when off throttle at 50-70 mph. I can get it to go away if I balance the thottle a bit. It doesn't seem to be engine speed related. Driveshafts and rear bearings are are relatively new as is the chassis and hence the diff mounts.. Vibration isn't harsh, more of a low rumble and it seems to be at the rear of the car.. I am pretty sure that the impact was on the exhaust in the centre of the car (the clamps hang down a little.) I also picked up a rattle at the front at low revs (close to stalling) but levering the two exhaust pipes at the front apart seems to have solved it.. Thoughts? barkerwilliams
Tim, sent you a pm. Alan
John McCormack
I have had vibrations which we believe are from a defective CV joint half shaft which doesn't have an adequate range of compression. Yours may have compressed beyond their normal range on the bump. Worth checking. Edited July 23, 2018 by John McCormack
Tim D.
Ok so have driven it some more. Vibration only occurs at 70 mph on a balanced throttle. Off or on the throttle is fine. Any ideas? Cheers Tim
Waldi
Maybe Soft rubbers for engine or GB or some play in the diff rubbers? Under load the clearance is reduced to zero, especially on the diff. Worth checking, but no more than just a thought. Waldi
Tim D.
Does make sense. Diff rubbers were replaced a few years ago, but a very slight clunk returned recently.
Tim D.
Just done 1000 miles around the southwest in the TR.. so have learnt more about the vibration.. Only at 70 mph and above.. definitely through the seat of the pants.. only happens when just off throttle.. fully off or on and there is no vibration.. not related to engine speed. Checked under the car at the weekend and the diff mountings look fine.. no excessive movement.. Suspect the prop shaft.. what do you guys think? Cheers Tim
TR NIALL
Process of elimination me thinks, start with the Prop new ones are not expensive from Proptech.
Tim D.
Yes. Prop ordered.
SeanF
Used one just come up on EBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/triumph-tr6-car-parts-used-Prop-Shaft/202400869814?hash=item2f20082db6:g:sW0AAOSwhUtbcJEa

Tim D.
Stuart. Wish I had known. Was down by you last week. Tim
Tim D.
Ok and so the winner is.... Both rear diff mounts!! The tubes through the middle of both have pulled out of the rubber. What awful parts. Only been on the car for about 5000 miles. So have replaced with mounts from the TR shop. Interestingly these have different markings. So fingers crossed. ShaunC
Mine the same, and I'd previously changed them in the last 2 years. I've gone soft blue poly this time.
Tim D.
That's worrying. The new ones that I fitted have the same marks as your ones that failed.
ShaunC
I'd be surprised if there is more than one manufacture of this rubber diff mount...There may be subtle changes over time but generally they all come from the same place no matter who sells them. Lets hope the poly version lasts a bit longer. Edited August 21, 2018 by ShaunC
Tim D.
Repeat post Edited August 21, 2018 by Tim D.
Tim D.
Yes but the ones I fitted 3 years ago had no markings.
ShaunC
At least you will know if they start to fail again? Maybe premature ageing due to exhaust pipe routing, i.e. heat?
Tim D.
That would only affect on of them. I suspect rubbish parts. Tim
hot-growler
waiting patiently for outcome of this thread. getting same vibrations too. suspect my mounts are originals. going to check tonight. thanks steve.
Tim D.
Checking is easy. Jack the car up and if there is no gap between the large washer and the rubber bush the tube has come adrift from the rubber bush. Cheers Tim
