Keith66
Hi All Any thoughts on refurbing the soft top frame? Mine is is not to bad, a little surface rust in some areas and alot of it will easily come off with the wire brush attachment on an angle grinder and its easy enough to paint at home and topcoat with some satin black. But the question is how long will that last and has anyone done it differently, like shotblasting then powder coating or dipping and two pack paint. Also what sort of rough costs would be involved in the alternatives. Cheers Keith
ed_h
Keith-- I sand blasted mine and then shot it with a good 2-part epoxy primer. This is the primary protection against rust. I top coated with black SEM trim paint for aesthetics. If the frame would have fit in my oven, I might have powder coated it instead--not because it would necessarily last longer, but it would have been quicker. There are some other things you can do to rejuvenate the frame. Some pics here: http://bullfire.net/TR6/TR6-100/TR6-100.html Ed

Waldi
For me Eds information is better than anything else Ive seen on the www. The analysis, solutions and photos are brilliant. Often when I encounter something I would like to double check, I have a look. The only negative aspect I can mention is that my own work looks so poorly done????????. Thanks Ed, keep on with your exellent work. Waldi
Keith66
Waldi, Magnus and Hossack Completly agree about Ed's site, very interesting and informative and has even given me much needed motivation and guidance at times. But i don't have the space (single domestic garage) to do some of the things like my own blasting and proper painting, just a bit of angle grinder work and painting with rattle cans, which for the hood frame i was concerned was not hardwaring enough. So I i wanted some suggestions and info on what people had done here, esp the midlands. But i think i've kind of decided to continue with the manual paint/rust removal and then get it painted properly with an Epoxy of two pack satin black. I've got my own TR6 story from barn find wreck to near complete (no interiour seat or trim yet) but i've decided not to put it on the web, err yet. Maybe one day if it all comes together ok. Waldi
Hi Keith, Sorry for going off track again. A wire brush will do fine. I have black gloss poly eurethane paint, it gives a very durable tough coat, can be brushed on (thats what I do). Google this forum for how to work PU paint: No moisture/ water in the tin, a bit of plastic foil on the tin before closing it to avoid bonding it together. But recommended for all bits and pieces. And 0,5 liter goes a long long way. Smaller tins are preferred, since in the end it will set in the can once opened. Hope this helps. Waldi
Bill Bourne
Hi Kieth For what it’s worth, I gave a frame for a Tr5 re-build to TR Trader for re-furb, and he did a great job. He replaced all of the large rivets that become loose over the years and are difficult to do yourself. Re-painted etc. From memory I think it cost around £150. Well pleased.
