Hi All

 

I know this one has been discussed before but this is more of a technical question rather than an opinion.

 

So my 1972 TR6 is off the road at present undergoing a long term restoration.

 

As its now MOT exempt do I need to MOT it when finished or do I just remove the sorn declare it MOT exempt and tax it?

 

If the latter is ok how long does that process take and can I commence it prior to it being finished or is it still illegal to go through that process with a car which could not pass an MOT despite it sitting in my garage and there being no intention of it being on the road until complete.

 

Ill probably get it checked over by a specialist before driving it regularly anyway but just want to cover all eventualities.

When you get round to getting it on the road MOT it as normal and tax it that way all your work can be properly checked just in case and your nice and legal so the insurance man cant wriggle!

Stuart when my TR6 was MOT-ed in May this year on the new system. I waited for it to be done. I was surprised at the thoroughness of the Tester. They certainly have tighten up on the procedure. Although I had put on another metering unit in Dec last year I was a bit fearful of the smoke test? as TR PI's can smoke if you suddenly floor the accelerator, lucky mine did not but I am certain that this test is going to catch out quite a few TR PI's!

It seems you are supposed to fill out a form if this is the first time of exemption, but some have noticed when they try online to tax, it's already declared as mot exempt, so you might want to try online and see what happens

Im surprised they did a smoke test, maybe they have had a few old smokers in lately! I just had my 4a done and yes a much more thorough test, though they have been testing that car for 25yrs they went through with a fine tooth comb which was good as it pinpointed what I had suspected that there was a slight imbalance on the rear brakes which on a single line system (4a) has to make 25% on the handbrake
