If they weren't trying to pass it off as a TR5 they wouldn't have bothered hoodwinking the DVLA.

They wouldn't have put TR5 badges on it.

They wouldn't be asking £42K.

The kit car market is similarly infected with ne'er-do-wells usually selling newish builds complete

with old kit car V5s or an old "donor vehicle" V5. There was an amnesty twenty years ago which allowed corrections to the paperwork but nowadays the DVLA are not so easy going.***

They usually get flagged up on the forums but the attitude of many posters is " who cares?"

I despair.

Just a personal opinion of course, but In a TR 250 you are pretty certain that it will get you there, maybe a little slower than the 5.

But with a TR5 you can't ever be sure of getting there at all.

Have I shown you my new TR 250 bought from Georgia early this morning. (Somebody has to save em)

Nice one Pete and with a surrey too it was very cheap at the price.

Looks like you and tomtr250 are saving the TR 250 world ( apart from the ones which have been re-badged ) B)

Mike its easy to buy just look at TR250/ TR5 on the American e:bay site

Regards

Rex

Thanks Rex, popped on the US Ebay and saw a few, good luck with the 250 Pete.

The beauty of this thread is that any potential buyer can enter the reg num and read what has been said and then make his/her own mind up.

I did note though that the 250 was fitted with a 5 chassis a few years back, so not sure how the CD number works, ie does it keep the CD plus numbers or now have CP xxxxx?

The car was NOT fitted with a TR5 Chassis. I had the new chassis made for my TR250 by CTM who make ALL the new chassis available in the UK.

No reference was made at the time as to the model of the chassis, it was a new 250 Chassis, for a 250.

I wouldn't believe some of these people if they had the archangel Gabriel sat on their shoulder.

It would be interesting for someone more knowledgeable than me to point out the differences between them.

I expect the only way to prove its identity is to check its com numbers with Roger Ferris who is the TR 5 Registrar.

CP xxx is TR5 CD xxx is TR250

Surely the buyer would check it out before coughing up nearly £ 43K

Rex

That would depend if the buyer was aware. I wasn't when I purchased my 5, although it did come through a TR specialist, so would expect all to be correct.

I would have soon known after applying for the Heritage Certificate.

My v5 clearly stats TR250 so DVLA need to be made aware I'd suggest Roger Ferris takes it up with them.

It is interesting to read the Ebay description for this 'TR5' .... there is a statement to the effect that it is in fact a TR250 (as it left the factory) but was rebuilt to TR5 spec.

That, to my mind, is an admission that it is not a TR5 and representing it as one is fraud.

Trouble is Hawk, somewhere along the line the car has been registered (incorrectly in the opinion of many) as a TR5, so Trading Standards are unlikely to take much interest. After all, the seller is selling it as a 5 and it's registered as one.

There is a group of 5 owners who are trying to tackle the issue by making representations to the DVLA and the FBHVC at the moment, but I think it'll be a long and difficult process.

I get that but it just doesn't sit well with me.

It rolled out of the factory as a TR250 and as such, will always be a TR250. It could be a TR5 tribute or replica but not a TR5 no matter what the V5 says.

As Darren has mentioned a few of us are trying to do something about this. It would be useful to get more support. The more voices the louder we will be heard. We have reported the dealer to the Trading Standards. They have called the dealer, which was a result. But they can’t do much because it’s been registered as a 5. So they recommend we write to the DVLA, which we have also done. No reply yet. If the DVLA do carry out a correction and the dealer persists in calling it a 5; then it becomes a criminal offence and Trading Standards requested we contact them again if that turns out to be the case.. So we will wait and see what happens. In the meantime if you want to support us, simply send a PM to me or Darren or Mike Fields and voice your opinions and we will try and add those to our communications to the DVLA.

Best bill

I note that the seller is still ignoring my message s to them regarding the TR250 they are saying is a TR5

at risk of repeating whats already been said here are some pics of the car and their ad (again)

https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1009168

pic 1 the car as bought from Larry Conte in Maine USA on my trailer coming from the docks after arrival, body is shot.

pic 2 New chassi being made at CTM, this is just an ordinary chassis as used on many TR models, nothing specific.

pic 3 The rust free body bought from California connections San Diego scrap yard.

pic 4 and 5 working on the rebuild

pic 6 The completed car on Werneth Low in Cheshire.

I registered the car as a TR250, no doubt. I have suggested that the ad is misrepresenting the car which I think is not lawful.

In spite of these facts being given to the seller, it remains as a TR5 on Car and Classics.

Not right at all.

Pete

I bet their phrase:-

Also on file is a copy of the factory Heritage certificate that shows the car originally left the factory in December 1967 as a TR250 and was dispatched to Genser & Forman Inc of New York before returning home in 2008 to be prepared for the complete build and it was re-built to the correct TR5 specification, totally standard.

Covers them.

I suppose a better description - used in high end classic and vintage circles is - evocation- a phrase I dislike- but when you can buy a Bugatti type 35 and a Alfa 6/8c replicas why not our triumphs.

Learning point for me though ??

Are Tr5s righth hand drive and the 250s left ??

Hamish,

All TR250s left the factory as LHD but many are now converted to RHD.

Some TR5s were supplied as LHD to the continent, etc. Nothing is ever simple!!

Cheers
