CV joint in driveline query

Recommended Posts

Ok, another slightly weird query, I do like them !

Has anyone had any problems with the UJ between the prop shaft & the differential, after fitting CV joints between the differential & the wheels ?

How do you mean a problem, it could be now youve got rid of play in the driveshafts by replacing them its now showing up play there.

id you change them when you put the drive shafts on?

Whilst U/Js on the drive shaft tend to wear sooner because of the working angles - the props do eventually wear out or seize (irrespective of if you have CV or u/j drive shafts).

Can't think of any sound reason why they should wear quicker with CV jointed drive shafts fitted, however it is conceivable that when they are worn, the lack of slop in the driveshafts will load the worn U/Js more and accelerate their final demise, but shouldn't be an issue if they are in good nick.

The propshaft UJ is maybe 6 years old, maybe 20k miles, totally wrecked ! The CVs were installed 15 months ago, due to a drive shaft UJ being snapped by a rock. The diff was out for inspection (no damage). So not sure if the UJ might have been worn & missed 15mths ago, damaged by the incident & missed, maybe the propshaft fell & hit the floor damaging the UJ, or the CV joints have aggrivated it.

Did you put the propshaft back with the ujs correctly orientated when you had the diff out.

I have cv driveshafts, done about 8000 miles now with no uj prob. However I did fit new prooshaft ujs about 12000 mikes ago when i had the propshaft ballanced. Has your prop lost a balanced weight?
