A fabulous car, with all the right bits but big bucks. Like the advert says, would cost a fortune to replicate Simon Edited May 21, 2018 by simonjrwinter
Rem18
75k to do today!! hmm we seem to be getting out of proportion again. My father still has his from new 1970 6, I wonder what I would ever ask if we sold it? Will the bank lend me the money to put it or my 5 to highest spec as an investment hahahaha Drive em and enjoy em, 75k is too much to spend. Just MHO....
Hawk
Cost to build today would be over £75k - irrelevant. I could quite easily say that mine (which has approaching £40,000 of receipts) would cost over £100,000 to build if labour at £90 an hour plus vat was charged. the car looks to be nicely done but a number starting with a 4 is way too high IMO. high twenties is a realistic sale price IMO
Rem18
Well most is labour intensive. But what does a decent chassis cost now I wonder?

barkerwilliams
Over the years on the TR RegisterI find it strange and saddening that the high cost of restoring a vehicle is poohoo'd and there is a desire for only the Poundland valuation. If a vehicle is not worth a substantial percentage of its rebuilding costs then all the TR's will surely be heading for the scrapheap. Yes some cars will have over-the-top expenditure on personal preferences but you don't get 'owt for now't, quality components and skilled engineers cost. I'm sure E types were once derided at £6,000. Why invest in preserving a vehicle for the future at substantial cost for those who do not value it? Alan

simonjrwinter
sadly the cost of a professional restoration does not add up for a TR6. Home restoration is the only way ahead

Rem18
I always think that we have to look to the future and for us old codgers there may still be a few out there who want to fork out for a Tr6 at £50k. Not me for sure. I have three sons brought up squashed in the back of mine (book says 2+2 after all) merrily breathing petrol fumes on TR's but even so if I gave them £50k they would go and but an Audi R8 or a couple of WRC's. I think we have to be realistic, our cars will keep their charm but young people may prefer the car that was the bees knees when they were a teenager and not the bees knees when dad was a kid. Even Harry has now got an electric e-type when he could have used his dads DB5. Edited May 21, 2018 by Rem18
Graham
To be honest if you look at the spec and its your dream car, and you don't have the ability to do the work yourself, then its a VERY cheap car. I have just built/had built a car of similar spec, and when I skim through the bills then the figure they are quoting is there or there abouts. Why did I spend so much money on a TR6............because its my money and I will enjoy every one of the next 20 or so years thrashing the bits off it and after that I'll probably be cast caring, Hell thats only just over 10p a day
Rem18
Hell thats only just over 10p a day hahahaha thats if you use it every day in the UK.?? But you will need a better calculator Graham????? as say 2,000days /£75k is more like £37,50 p/d. Still a good deal. I bought my 5 with the intention of either swapping it for a fully restored one when I was rich or getting it restored. Then my Mrs fell in love and I am no longer able to sell it. 25 years later with the prices I am still here. I have thrashed it up and down over 400 Alpine passes, where I live, used it in 14 historic rallies, been to the supermarket about 1m times (was just out to an English school class in it to show how Brits drive on the wrong side of the road). Its only cost me a gearbox, a suspension bush set and a radiator recore and half a respray on the insurance (drove out of the garage with the door open) I paid £10k and I really can use it 300 days a year where I am so £10,000 + about £1,000 means £1,46 per day, then if I factor in its a 5 and got to be worth a fraction over £30k even if I dont tart her up, so I made £2,66 p/d hahahahhaha Edited May 21, 2018 by Rem18
michael pridham
This TR6 is a nice car but if you compare it to the TR5 which as just been listed on the cars for sale at £39k seems to make this car expensive IMO. Michael
Rem18
Hat off to anyone who has the time and money but most of all skill. Certainly if your going to invest so much you might as well pick a model that is going to give you the best return, obviously within your tastes. Michael which one were you referring to? RogerH
Hi Rem, Graham quoted 20 years use - that is 7300 days / £75000 so it is nearer £10/day - Graham can't count. Still cheap driving. As my wife said when I told her that my 4A cost apprx £25k in the late 90's over a 7 year period - ' if I joined a good golf club it would have cost me more in the period and I would have nothing but memories.' I have a 4A Roger

Rem18
Golf? Whats Golf? Isnt that a make of a boy racer? Hahaha Roger yes But again your counting every day as a TR day. I was only counting the driving days as here I am a bit luckier with more like 250-300 possibles. I was counting 100 driving days a year for Graham allowing for British weather. In your case I bet you are probably taking mince pies out to the garage on xmas day too in your count as every day hahahaha. RogerH
Hi Tony, I use my 4A 300+days per year. Probably nearer 330 days. I have a nice Saab 9.3 that does apprx 8000 miles per year. The 4A is nearer 12,000 and up to 15,000miles. The British weather is a bit of a joke but do'able. Roger
Rem18
Grand Roger, I have 4 cars and have to say my modern BMW only did 3,000miles last year hahahaha But now the real challenge to you. This year I purposefully raised the hood on my 5 when garaged as I realised it hadnt been up in 3 years!!! I have regularly thought about removing the hood and just using the car with the hood bag. I have used it regularly in snow and -15°c with ski gear and once drove my dads 6 back to the UK in January via Monte Blanc with the hood down all the way home to UK. We had jackets, Deerstalkers and scarves mind you. In this case a pal flew in from the UK and I picked him up at Milan airport just to drive him back to his wife within 36 hours... Who can beat that lets hear it? I bet someone can hahahahhahaa Maybe we should start a new thread just about who uses their car the most?
