The Missing Thingy

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I have an odd rattle in my 4A. It lurks somewhere behind the dashboard.

I also have an odd problem with the wipers every now and then they stop working. A quick flick of a blade gets them going again.

Yesterday I had the idea that perhaps they were related.

Today I removed all the parts to enable removal of the wiper wheelbox covers.

When the covers were removed - lo and behold - everything appeared normal (bu99er)

Upon reassembly I dropped one of the speedo attachment nuts.

Did it fall onto the rubber mat - no

Did it fall onto the top of a wire loom - no

Did it fall - yes

Which direction - probably up if I know my luck (not been a good couple of days)

OK, not a major disaster. I'll make another one. What is the thread size. I had an inkling that ot was 3BA.

My newish Zeus book only gives tapping sizes - no other data.

Thankfully I have an old Zeus book. It confirms it could be 3BA.

My thread gauges don;t fit the thread. BA threads are very strange (6BA is the perfect thread shape).

Thankfully I do have 3BA taps - the threads to line up.

10 minutes on the lathe and I have a new nut.

I shall now go out to the car to fit the new nut and expect to find the old nut on the rubber mat.

You will have 2 rattles now ????????

Try a magnetic probe will prob find them both.

Also check glovebox lid stay.

Send me the rattle. After driving home from the museum the other day by the back roads Eric now has quite a few new ones so another one will not make a difference.

I have noticed a rattle recently somewhere near the bulkhead.

A search under the bonnet for anything loose did not find anything,

Rattle still there today, felt under the dash while driving, Found it !

It was the two flaps on the heater just touching each other when fully open.

Rattle now gone.

Bob.

Hi Chris,

the nuts are Ali so the magnetic will not work. I'm sure if I did use the magnet then end would fall off :o and stay with the nuts.

The mystery continues.

When I had a rattle it turned out to be the brake pipe running across the bulkhead under the bonnet but sounded just like it was under the dash. Give it 3 or 4 months and you will either find it or another louder one will develop and drown it out!????????

Maybe it's age related Roger, we all loose our nuts in the end, so I'm told ????

My rattles are always shortly after placing spare coins and/or screws and bolts in the ashtray, and then forgetting I put them there LOL

Hi Paul,

you can send all your spare coins to me :) - but I do not want your rattles. :o
