Bit of speedometer drive broken off & stuck in speedo

Recommended Posts

I've been able to extract a piece from the OD end with a dental pick. That one was long enough to have a tiny bit of the spring accessible to the pick.

Chances are, if it broke off in there, then it will be pretty much jammed in. You may have to dismantle the speedo, & try to push it out from the inside.

(if that is possible ?) Opening up a speedo to check this is not rocket science.

Remove bezel & glass, unscrew the trip meter reset knob, undo the two cheese head screws on the rear, & the whole lot comes out through the front.

That is as far as you should need to go to see if you can get to the other side of the broken part.

Be careful if you try to remove the bezel & glass. I’ve been experimenting with speedos/tachos recently and every write-up I’ve seen warns you not to pry up the little “Tabs” that hold the bezel on. You have to “Simply” twist the bezel to get it off (The tabs will align with slots in the case.)

Unfortunately after years of being un-disturbed the whole thing can become welded together as one. I have to admit that I have bent the tabs up slightly and got away with it, but you really do run the risk of snapping them off. If that happens then you will need to get a new bezel.

You may also need to replace the rubber seal between the glass and the body as it may well be perished.

I’d be a bit wary of using magnets. The whole process of the way that the instrument works involves magnets. It’s possible that by putting a very strong magnet near the bit where the cable has snapped could alter the calibration.

I’d go for the dental pick or needle method.

UPDATE: I’ve just found a TR speedo that I have taken out of the case. It is not possible to get to the back of the hole where the cable goes in.

Even though I have TR less for a while now I still keep an eye on the forum! To remove the bezel wear a rubber glove (marigold or similar!!) to grip the bezel, works well.

Don't think any magnet will couple strongly enough if this is anything other than very loose.

Also think super-glue is risky and likely to stick the thing in.

I'd go for a 1mm drill running as fast as I could manage. I'd have it a bit loose in my chuck and hope it would jam as it made its way in amongst the wires.

You'd need to get in about 4-5mm to stand to chance of using the drill to pull it out.

Many thanks all, I might just send it away to a pro, the annoying thing is that it was recalibrated about 2 years ago, I probably didn't seat the speedo back in well enough when I put it back on the car. Ce la vie !
