TR5 New Chassis Yes or NO

Recommended Posts

Hi

Need some advice seriously considering spending the 40-50k on my dream TR5 and have come across some real stunning examples as you would expect, some of which have been furnished with a new chassis, I was absolutely hoping to buy an all original example but with prices escalating and open market cars becoming fewer I have to consider the possibility of compromising on my ideal.

I would love to know your thoughts / feelings on a TR5 with a new chassis, please dont hold back as I am interested in the good the bad and the ugly. many thanks for your time and i appreciate your honest opinion.

Many Thanks Paul

Straightforward beauty contest.

If you a looking for a survivor car with low mileage and all existing parts and paint coverings in place then it has to be original in all parts, of course you'd be reluctant to use it.

A low mileage survivor may be worth your purchase price but a TR used as you may like to enjoy it, 5-8 Thousand miles a year ? will swiftly lose it's qualifying characteristics.

On the other hand a TR with a new chassis from an accredited supplier approved by the DVLA is in it's best condition to safely allow road use and in my view this in itself helps maintain it's appeal and value.

I've got a 'new' chassis on BUO, the back end had already been replaced, and the middle needed replacing as the whole thing had gone thin and 'hogged' that only left the front turrets, and as they were used for the 'new' chassis......do I actually have a 'new' chassis or has the 'original' one just been extensively repaired

Hi Paul,

welcome to the forum.

If you can't log into the Members area on the home page then give the office a call as your avatar does not show you as a member.

If you are referring to the Members Chat forum then you can't get in there yet because it doesn't recognise you as a club member.

Looks a nice car but there are a few cosmetic details that are not correct but all changeable . That is if original is what is required. The chassis i would say is a replacement rather than new, thats from photos though.

I would agree Roy.It is not a new CTM chassis and as you say a few cosmetic details need addressing.

Depends what it is selling for.

A new chassis is the best way to go in my eyes.I have seen them being made up in CTM's workshop over the years and still impress.

Hi Paul, looks like a very nice car but if you want original then the wheels (which I actually prefer) aren't and surly it should have a rad cowl.

Apart from that for over 50k I would expect a new CTM chassis and telescopic rear dampers . Original is fine but if you plan to drive it which is what these cars were made for then some upgrades are desireable.

I might be wrong Chris, but I don't think the 5 had a rad cowl when it was made.

Mick's advice above is good, in that it depends on what you are after. Absolutely original 5s are few and far between, so if that is what you are looking for, then look very carefully at all the detail and take expert advice ... and be prepared to pay the extra for the car. You'll be paying for the "originality", so you want to be sure of it, and then guard the car with your life, because if you have to change anything the originality diminishes.

For £52k I'd want it just right.

Cheers, Darren

Item 96 not a full cowl but a deflector. https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/triumph/tr5-6/cooling-system/radiators-hoses-fittings/cooling-system-tr5-6.html

Lovely car and fair value for the money. I'd drive this one, as repro sills and front valance are evident, likely other panels too. Don't see the hardtop; would want that dearly.

Starting with a relatively rust-free example it's easy to put 1000 hours into one. Do the math! No one's getting rich on offers like this.

Being in the 'States I'd go for a TR250, spend a few K on Webers, cam, head work and get the performance ( without the worries! ). Dennis Wilson has several nice TRs at any given time; one cream-puff '250 in Royal Blue for 1/2 the price of this one.

Cheers,

Tom

Many Thanks for all your excellent information, it is a lot of money but unfortunately that seems to be the way of it with TR5's now, ive been looking for about 2mths and cant find anything under very late 40's.

Thanks to you all again

Wow having read all the possible fraud 5's that may be available I am extremely nervous about spending this amount of Money !!

Does a heritage certificate ensure a genuine 5 ?

VERY NERVOUS, I obviously foolishly assumed if it looks like a 5 sounds like a 5 it must be a 5.

Hi Paul,

I'm surprised, as it looked to me a while back like the prices were not really moving, although in saying that I don't look too often. Have you talked with any of the specialist TR firms about what you are looking for? There are a handful that only deal in TRs and often sell on commission too.

The right car at the right price will come along, but sometimes you need to wait a bit for it. You'll know when you find it.

Cheers, Darren

It looks like the cross box on this particular car is not installed properly and too low on the nearside, and could easily hit the deck.

I had a crossbox installed for convenience on my TR4a by a classic car garage who MOT'd it, and as the metal strap welded to the box was too long they did away with the rubber mounting strip and bolted it straight to the chassis. Vibrated like a goodun!

I ended up having to shorten the metal strap, redrill it and refit with correct rubber mounting. This looks similar to me, though it looks like they've fitted the rubber strip.
