What us the fast idle cam supposed to do. Mine is preventing the throttle from closing fully and this makes the tick over too high.

Can I just remove it and use the choke and the foot pedal?

I am sure that SU had a reason for including it. Maybe I am using it wrongly but it can not be adjusted so that the screw is clear of the cam at any point.

I am planning to run without it unless someone can help.

Thanks Richard :(

Richard

Has the cam been put on the spindle the wrong way round such that the screw carrier is always in contact with the cam

Have the carburettors been rebuilt?

If with the rod disconnected to the cam will not leave the adjusting screw in any position I would guess the adjusting arm may have been fitted to the throttle shaft in the wrong place. The arm is pinned to the shaft and the shaft would have needed to be drilled if replaced.

Yes the carbs were rebuilt, by a specialist, and it does look as if the lever is in the wrong position. This makes sense when looking at the set up. I do not feel that it is safe to drill out the pin and fit a new one. My drilling is not neat enough by hand anyway.

So, can I manage without it or should I start filing down the cam.

Thanks Richard

Hi Richard ~

Here's the fast idle/choke cam on my 3A. I have two thou clearance between the cam and adjusting screw in the 'off' position.

When you pull the choke control to the first 'click' it should only increase the fast idle and not engage the choke.

If you need any more help then please get in touch.

Tom.

If you disconnect it you will need to keep your right foot on the throttle until it is warm enough to idle. This can be a real pain in traffic, especially on hill starts.

After all the help I have concluded that the arm is not in the correct position. I have moved the rod to a different fixing hole and now the tick over is 600 rpm and the cam is working as it should. There is clearance under the adjusting screw.

Thanks for the advice

Richard

Hi Richard

go to more options - bottom right hand corner.

Click on 'choose file' - bottom left corner

Click on your picture form your file - make sure the pic size is not toooooo big 100Kb is good.

Click on 'attach this filer' - bottom left hand corner

Position cursor where you want the pic and then click add this pic - right hand side.
