So (can't remember now, but) isn't there an

on/off panel light switch in the instrument panel?


Was that deleted when the rheostat was fitted?

If so, what was fitted in its place?

The rheostat on my 3a goes from off to too dim at the first touch and then progressively dimmer as I rotate the knob.

As a useful item it is right up there with the adjustable steering column which goes from too close to in your face????

I reckon the Rheostat is as useful as a chocolate whatever. You could always use the hole for another warning light / low oil pressure, overdrive or electric fan.....

Mine is a late 59 with a rheo

But cant say its original. But certainly look the part.
