Bought a couple of new trunnions today just to sling in my parts bin. However Mr Moss does 2 types, a 'proper' one and a 'replacement' obviously there is a price difference and me being me went for the more expensive option!

So the questions are:

  • What IS the difference between the two? (how would one know that a 'cheap' one hadn't been put into a bag marked with the more expensive option!) Hypothetical question!!
  • I note that the bottom has a steel base, is that correct?

ROGERRRRRR one for you!

Hi Dave,

I haven't a clue.

I see that at least they show that the TR4A and TR6 use the same part.

But then they slip in a Left Hand trunnion out of the blue for slightly cheaper but only for the TR6

Why no cheap RH trunnion.

I can't see a difference in the pics but then they may be the same component for the sales pic.

I have had cheap ones sent to me by mistake ( not Moss ) and you can clearly see the difference (nasty, nasty). I sent them back pronto and got the dearer ones from Moss. These have SKN stamped or embossed on and very nice. Why someone goes to the bother of making inferior stuff and then an outlet buys and sells this stuff is beyond me!

The cheaper option ones from Moss are old stock before they had the considerably better ones re-tooled. Well worth paying the extra for the "Proper" ones.

Hmmm interesting, I converted my '3 to the late TR4 type last year to give 3° castor angle, along with various other mods.

One side was marked as above, the other side was not. They were clearly from a different manufacturer. They both seemed to fit OK.

& were both the same price (£45.83) & from the TR shop.

Ah thanks for that chaps.... I don’t do cheap! So I will open the packets and look at the material and stamping!

One further q . With these items is it worth or even necessary to run a bead of solder round the base?

TBH I would as it will seal them against anything you care to fill them with.

Yes, two reasons: the bottom disc can rotate while you are trying to fit the grease nipple, & once fitted grease can leak out round the edge of the disc, & not go where it is supposed to.
