Wheel and Tyre Observations / Recommendations

Recommended Posts

One aspect of rebuilding DRN 4D, what to do about wheels and tyres . . . . the V8 Lady insisted that we retain standard wires, painted of course. No chrome bling ! New wheels at £150 a time are out of the budget, period. In any case, she likes originality.

The quintet of original factory 60-spokers were supplemented by a quartet of decent looking originals purchased from a fellow Forumite, giving a choice of nine wheels in all. Thank you, that man !

Tyres were easy, five of Vredestein T-Trac2 from the guys at Camskill, from whom I've purchased several sets of tyres in recent years, an absolutely first class supplier. The price was unbeatable, nobody else even came close. Same applies to the huge Uniroyal rubber I've just ordered from them for the Jag. Delivery usually in 48 hours for £4/tyre.

Inner tubes, proper Michelin rather than the cheap and nasty pseudo-brands offered by too many specialists, from Longstone - along with their own rubber rim tapes, which look decent enough. Again, excellent value and next day delivery.

Then the big decision, what to do about the wheels themselves. A local recommendation to Nick Mouat of Salisbury, who was kind enough to thoroughly inspect all nine wires with me . . . . six proved up to scratch, as in needing reasonable work, whereas three needed more remedial work than sensible.

No problem, the trio will be fine for slave wheels bearing old tyres, mounted on the car for winter garage storage . . . . along with one of the 'goodies' similarly shod. Takes the strain off the normal road tyres.

Nick attended to the six, trueing them up, replacing the odd spoke as required, then they were gently blasted and painted in an appropriate shade of 2-pack silver. Ready for collection some 3 weeks later, can't grumble at that. They look just as they should, refurbished Stanpart originals as opposed to new bling, and the tyre bay balancer confirms a job well done.

Cost for the painstaking inspection of all nine, and refurbishment of six ?

£350 all in, which I reckon as being remarkably reasonable for a proper job.

A careful and conscientious young man is Nick, who shares his premises with a motorcycle wheel specialist who has clearly been around for a very long time. I doubt there's anything by way of wire wheels that they couldn't tackle between them. Competent craftsmen, not members of the b*llsh*t baffles brains brigade. Well recommended.

Usual disclaimers, I'm just the proverbial satisfied customer.

Cheers,

Alec
