WFTR Events and Galleries

Recommended Posts

Whilst the TRR website has many useful features it doesn't quite do all the things we need. One of these is the ability to register interest in an event. Because of this we have been developing our own site for a number of years giving us a lot of fine control over the details we publish.

For example, we can categorise and list our events: http://wftr.co.uk/wftr-events/

And once you have got the event you get all the details and then register your interest. This is quite important for events with limited space. For example: http://wftr.co.uk/event/cream-tea-run-3/

In the backend there are number of reports you can run to manage registrations, email everybody attending and even add names to mailchimp.

And because we have integrated galleries we can link these to event and vice versa: http://wftr.co.uk/galleries/

And we can add pages and menu items as and when we want: http://wftr.co.uk/home-coming-for-33761/

And finally, as part of our ongoing program of improvements members now have the ability to add their own events. This means if you are attending a local show or whatever you can let other members know should they also wish to come along: http://wftr.co.uk/wftr-events/add-an-event/

So that's how we roll at the WFTR Group. It's not going to be for everybody but doing it this way means it's really easy to organise events. And the best bit of all, the cost is zero. Everything you see is free, no need to spend any money at all.

Could you let me know what platform you used to make the site? It looks really good.

Apologies for the delay in replying, we have been busy adding new features (which we will tell you about very soon).

The website was built using wordpress (free) and a simple theme (free).

The events use the Quick Event Manager plugin (free).

The galleries use the built in wordpress gallery feature.

One of the problems we had was getting pictures from members. The only method was to send them by email to the webmaster (me), I'd then have to collate, edit and resize then upload to the website. But technology has come to our rescue.

We now have a dropbox account to which members can upload their images. We can then organize the images ready for importing into the website.

Using a plugin we can import directly from dropbox and automatically resize the images ready to be added to a gallery.

While it's not quite finished, using these tools will make it easier for members to uploads images and for the site administrators to build galleries.

As before, if you want to know how to implement this yourself let us know.

More improvements have arrived.

Members can now upload their images directly to dropbox. All they need to do is login to their WFTR account and drag and drop images onto a webpage. The galleries can then be created and posted on the website.

Sounds complicated but it's really simple. Instructions here: http://wftr.co.uk/dropbox-uploader/

We've also added social shares to the activities so members can post to the facebook timeline or twitter feed. Scroll down the page to see the buttons: http://wftr.co.uk/event/drive-it-day-2018/

Coming soon is a way to pay for events and activities online - no need to collect cash anymore.

As always, everything you see is free. All the features and functions are open source and can be downloaded from the internet.

The story continues...

One of out members has set up a you tube channel and enjoys collating gallery images into video montages. We can now link to these videos and the you tube channel from the website. Hopefully the preponderance of dashcams will mean we can get more videos uploaded this year.

Here's what we have got so far: https://wftr.co.uk/wftr-videos/

The other new feature allows members to see what events they have registered for. If you want to give is a go you can use my email address: graham at aerin.co.uk on this page: https://wftr.co.uk/are-you-registered/

And we have also almost got our GDPR policy sorted. If you haven't done yours yet you don't have much time before the law comes into force at the end of May. all those spreadsheets and books you have with members details need to sorted and consent from all your members collated.

Lots of good advice here: https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/resources-and-support/data-protection-self-assessment/getting-ready-for-the-gdpr/

For a long time we have relied on cash and cheques for making payments to WFTR events. This can place quite a burden on those organising the event and the treasurer to get the money into the account.

WFTR Members have requested a more technologically advanced way of doing things so we have added a feature where members can pay directly through the website (using PayPal). You don't even need a PayPal account, you can use your credit or debit card. If member prefer to pay using alternate means (thus saving the PayPal transaction fee) there is a 'Pay Later' option. When they get their confirmation email it offers BACS or cash as a last resort.

All of the above means we won't in most cases need to handle cash anymore.

Take a look: https://wftr.co.uk/event/payment-test-event/

You can register and see how the system works. You may end up on the PayPal login page but no money will be taken.

Thanks Peter,

Just about everything on the site was the result of suggestions from WFTR members. We are busy working on a new feature where all our events, galleries and other features are automatically posted to facebook and twitter. It sort of works OK, just needs a bit of tweaking.

Just need the 25 likes and we can fix the naff URL: https://www.facebook.com/WIndsor-Forest-TR-160966808070949/
