Hood Poppers on body

Hi all

I am replacing the press studs on the body of the car.

could somebody be so kind as to tell me if they have replaced them and more importantly what washers (if any) are behind the poppers.

I have the correct studs / poppers but the first one I put on is loose (no washer used) and am considering nylon or fibre washers behind the popper but was wanting to know what others did.

Hi AarhusTr6 ~

 

I would strongly recommend fitting leather or plastic washers behind the studs to prevent damage to the paintwork.

Moss sell the leather washers but I prefer to make my own from a special plastic sheet that I have.

These are easily made using hollow punches.

Hi,

not sure what diameter of pop rivet you are using but there will be a plain steel washer that can fit it.

 

I would not use fibre or nylon as it will deform when the rivet is pulled through.

 

Also, make sure that the nose of the mandrel is sitting on the rivet when when you pull it throuhg. Otherwise it will be loose

PS - just seen Tom's post. You could put plastic or leather washer between the body and the steel washer.

Having read Roger's reply I thought you were referring to the studs as fitted to TR2/3 (Lift-a-Dot).

Obviously take Roger's advice.

not sure what he is referring to.

But if it is the pop rivets that go through the body then the washer will be on the back side of the body metal (I think)..

What I have done is so far successful which is replacing the studs on the hood cover (lets call them female) and next stage is putting new studs on the body (lets call them female). The first female on I put on, well its loose! I used a rivet and maybe I have crappy rivetting skills buts its loose and then thought maybe a nylon ring behind. So Roger, you say use a fiber ring on paint side, then washer then female stud?

not quite sure what it is you are doing. Which components on the attached link are you doing.

 

If the rivet goes through the body then there should be no need for anything there on;y the pop rivet.

If the hole is big then a small washer to spread the contact area would useful.

 

Fibre or nylon would be useless simply to hold the rivet in place.

Perhaps it is loose because the rivet gun mandrel was not sitting on top of the rivet head.

If there is a gap between rivet head and mandrel the rivet will be pulled back through the steel and the male stud will be loose.

When I fit pop rivets I sometimes have to fit a small steel washer to the underside.

You should not need washers , I suspect your rivet gun is fouling the popper when pulling tight , slide a small BA nut down the rivet before you slide it in your gun , this will allow the gun to pull tight against the rivet head and not the popper , there are very few rivet guns with a small enough head to go inside a popper and if they do it often cracks the plastic popper.

Not attempted this job yet. Having used pop rivets in the past , I have found using the wrong length can also cause this problem.

Any recommendation on a source for DURABLE poppers?

 

Previous ones I've fitted have eventually pulled apart because of the wafer thin material that's formed to secure the popper eventually gives up trying to hold on to the force they face when pulling the popper apart.....grrr!

Use a 4mm nut between the rivet gun and the fitting to the body -so fit the 4mm nut BETWEEN the rivet and the gun. This will allow the rivet to compress completely and therefore no slack in the fitting. test on a piece of steel first until you get it correctly sorted. regards clem
