Madmal
Morning all, I have fitted a Lumenition Performance Ignition System, which includes a 37kv coil, to my six and am pondering over plug gaps on my BP6ES's. The standard gap is .0025 but i have read some owners have gaps of up to .0040. The most popular gap, with uprated ignition systems, seem to be .0030 to .0032. Has anyone got any suggestions/advice about plug gaps? Cheers Mal
TriumphV8
The longer you have a working spark, the better it is. The problem is to know if it works reliable. Besides the tension in the coil the individual situation in the engine has an influence. That is why turbo engines have special plugs with a smaller tip and reduced gap. What I do is to make a log with my MegaSquirt and look after the AFR. If something is wrong with the ignition you can see that long before misfire happens. There a very little spikes in the AFR showing that a cylinder did not fire. My actual gap is 2mm, only possible with special plugs and CDI ignition. The other way is to play with the dwell time. After setting the gap to your convenience you reduce dwell until misfire comes up, than you increase dwell time by 1 millisecond. If you end in a suitable range below 4 milliseconds it is worth a try by driving. If you do not have all these little helpers I would recommend to leave the gap at the upper end that was recommended ex works. It does no harm and you benefit from the increased electrical power by a stronger spark especially at high revs.
