A few years ago. after fitting an exchange steering rack, I had the tracking checked by a large local tyre company who had some fancy laser equipment. They couldn't really cope with the wire wheels, the protruding centres got in the way of the lasers they needed to clamp on the wheel, so they set the tracking with those lasers about two-thirds of the way up the wheel from the ground. I was never happy with the steering, but put the vagueness down to the characteristics of the rebuilt rack, since there was no feathering or uneven wear on the tyres.

While waiting for the MOT (at a place I hadn't used before) last week, I noticed that an adjacent unit advertised tracking among other services, so I went in for a chat. They not only had the laser equipment but also the old Dunlop tracking gauges, and knew about the problem of wire wheels. They found the tracking was a little over an eighth of an inch toed out, instead of parallel to one eighth toe-in. The steering is totally transformed - much more precise, and doesn't get deflected so much by potholes. The tyre company who set it so badly has gone out of business...
