This summer, I had the gearbox fully overhauled and a new clutch plate. I am now able to select first and reverse with no grinding noise.

The change is not as smooth as i had hoped. I once drove TS2 and the gear change was very smooth. I want mine to be the same.

I have a new cross shaft , new thrust bearing and new bearing carrier, and new cover that I had in store for 20 years.

It is still chunky changing gear and we have covered only 300 miles. What parts control the smooth change that i am looking for?

I have extended the slave pushrod to make it longer in case the clutch was not working well. The longer push rod has not ,made any difference. Will it be allowing damage to the drive plate?

What shall I do now ?

Thanks Richard & H.

If, when selecting 1st or reverse gear, you can now do so without a "crunch" then the clutch is working as it should.

As Roger says the "notchy" gear change is more likely to be inherent in the gearbox. Either spring pressure in the top cover selector area, or spring pressure in the synchro hubs.

Is it an original TR 2-3A gearbox ? I ask because I have a Triumph 2000 box in my car, which would normally have a relatively long gear lever.

With my short TR3 lever it is quite notchy, but I am used to it.

Hi Richard,

was the gear change 'smooth' before the work.

One area that gives hard/chunky gear change is/are the indent balls on the selector rods in the top cover.

But your clutch work would not have affected this.

Roger, This sounds helpful. Who would be the best specialist to check this out for me if i take the top cover off. ORS in Sheffield were very good with my over drive. Please send me to a specialist gearbox company.

The internals of the gearbox were fully overhauled and I do not feel that there can be a problem there..

Thanks for the help.

Hi Richard,

the only decent GearBox shop down south is Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead not far off the M25.

Very helpful and very good. Many of the Thames Valey Group use them as do I.
