Dave Ashworth
Dear All, Apologies for my absense recently. I recently had to replace my throttle cable on the TR5. The old one snapped the night before I was setting off for France. So much for the early start. I acquired a brand new one from a friend. This stuck like a donkey in mud. Absolutely impossible to drive the car as the pedal would go from nothing to half throttle and back again and with no control whatsoever. It was fully oiled on the inside too. We had to abondon our plan for France and go to Fitchetts and purchased another new one. Exactly the same type. I fitted this outside Fitchetts and set off again for France. This one was much better but is now starting to stick like the first replacement. The problem seems to be that these remanufactured throttle cables don't have the inner nylon sheath that the originals had, so you get metal on metal. ie. the cable running against the steel wound outer cable. One well known TR specialist suggested cutting some of the outside plastic cover off so that you can oil it regularly from the outside, but lack of lubrication doesn't seem to be the issue, but friction is. Does anyone have any recommendations for other cables that might fit that are actually made correctly with the inner nylon sheath? Just another case of a product remanufactured which is not fit for purpose, or so it seems. Thanks for your help. Dave.
Stoker
Make your own from bicycle brake cable which is lined and smooth as silk. I have done this with both my Spitfire and TR6. Just Google bicycle cable and then all you need id a little ingenuity. John

Andrew Smith
Dave, Speak with Fitchett again and ask for one of these (a period replacement) - I bought a few several years ago and they sold them from 'under the counter', they may have some left: Cheers Andrew
Crawfie
Dave, Speak with Fitchett again and ask for one of these (a period replacement) - I bought a few several years ago and they sold them from 'under the counter', they may have some left: Cheers Andrew When my cable broke, you told me about these cables. Had it fitted for @3 years. I bought the last two (that's what Fitchetts said!!)
pfenlon
Dave go to your local bike shop (Racing Bicycles really) ask them for some Shimano outer brake cable. These cables are lined within the steel outer with a super smooth nylon tube inside, I have used the stuff on some of my cables and the operation is transformed. No more Biccy's for the wife for a while please Dave she is getting a bit on the heavier side! ( I am now in trouble ) I let her read it , and can we go back to plan A, more Biccys when possible. Best Pete.

Dave Ashworth
Gentlemen... Thank you so much for your splendid input. Thanks Billy, if I understand you correctly I'm only using one anyway. Pete you mentioned the bike cables at the list biscuit drop-off, but I had forgotten the details, so thanks again for this. Alan, those cables look fantastic, but also at a fantastic price to, so I think I'll do down the bike cable route first and see what I can cobble together. Thank you one and all. Cheers. Dave.
