Using html ( <img...> tag) to embed images ?

Recommended Posts

With the pending demise of Photobucket I was looking at other options for image hosting. I have 1TB of storage in OneDrive for example. OneDrive will allow me to embed an image in a blog or web site and will generate the html for me to cut and paste but our implementation of IP.Board doesnt seem to support it.

I can use the special BB code button to include the html and the post preview does show the embedded image but when I try and post it I get an error saying something like "that image extension is not allowed".

Perhaps the forum software could be configured to allow other means of embedding images that are not just url's to .jpg images ?

I'll look forward to the advice in this thread, as while it has long been possible to upload images, they appear as 'thumbnails' until clicked upon, and I have looked on with envy at those who can post a full sized image in their posts.

Hi John ~

I've always posted 'Thumbnail' images on the Forum because I was told that full size images took up too much storage space?

I would always prefer to post full sized images as per the attached.

Regards ~

Tom.

PS: I think I may have got this wrong??

I tried the same from Google image hosting and got the same error message when trying to post from there.

I cannot help with your question Stan, but I might have an answer for you John. I'm not sure what method you use to post photos at the moment, but here is what I do:

1. Before composing a message, I click on the "More Reply Options" button, that is to the right of the "Post" button below where you type your post.

2. Under the text box that appears, it say "Attach Files", and below that "Choose File". I click "Choose File" and navigate to where my picture is located.

3. Then I click on the picture file I wish to upload and its name appears to the right of the "Choose File button.

4. Then I click on "Attach this File", which appears under "Choose File". When I do that I see a small version of the image appear above where it says "Attach Files".

If you post your message at that point, you only see a thumbnail in the post. To see the larger image, you need one more step:

5. Where that small image appears, look along to the right of that and you should see an "Add to Post" button. Click that and the link to the picture should appear in your text box, and the photo should be visible when you complete the post. You can move the bit of text around in the post in order to choose where the picture appears.

Hope that helps.

Cheers, Darren

Edit:

Actually John, that method above doesn't seem to be working for me now, so perhaps something else has changed since I last used it.

Yep, above method works. Doing this adds the image to your "my media" so to use the same image again (in another section of the forum maybe)

just select it from "My Media".

Once it is in there you can also select it to go into PM's or to go into your signature.

That's what I've always done, and as you found gets a thumbnail. Perfectly good, as long as you and your readers are willing to click and wait a moment.

I wonder what's changed then, because I'm sure I've used that method in the past and it worked fine.

Nothing has changed, just added this using above method:

"my media" is just to the right of the smiley face you use to insert - smiley faces !

Yes Bob, I can add a photo like that, but I'm sure I used to be able to add a larger photo, one that didn't need to be clicked on to see full size ... i.e. it appears full size in the post from the outset. I think that is what John was getting at too.

Full size or thumbnail test

dropbox failed to work , was thumbnail and just did not load?

Would be interesting to know if anyone does get it to work.

Thanks

Chris

Boy, I'm glad I chose SmugMug for my paid hosting some years ago. About $40/year gives me unlimited full size storage. I have better than 20k images from the last 40+ years there. URLs easy to get and link here into posts.

If anyone has a *serious* image collection the want to move to cloud storage I can definitely recommend looking st SmugMug. Probably doesn't make sense for the odd forum post, of course -- that's where Photobucket before their death wish pricing changes worked well.

Thinking about starting a topic called "my media" which would exist only as a means of getting photos (or .pdf's) into our "my media - attachments" storage area.

Once in there they can be inserted into PM's & signatures.

There would be no point in reading any of the posts under this topic as they would only contain photos or .pdf's

Comments on this idea welcome

Bob.

I'm guessing Roger has his photos hosted someplace and they're shown in his signature via links, not from stored media on the forum.

That's how I do it, Niall -- it took some work to get mine as small as they sre.

Yes - that's what I do. I think mine are too big and when I get chance I'm going to reduce them.

Mine are on Flickr.
