Dave Larnder
Ah Hamish Now there's a car! Back in 1958 I went with a friend from north London to Weymouth in an Alvis Speed 20, that was before the motorways etc. obviously. My friend has since sold that car and has recently totally rebuilt another Speed 20, but I have yet to see it let alone ride in it, plenty of pics. of it though. DavidBee
Well, you know, Hamish, it's part of British motoring history, after all. "Proper order", as an Irish expression has it, meaning: as it should be. On this point, and the period — late 1950- early 1960s? — fits in perfectly with my point, half of every single issue of Motorsport was about vintage cars and vintage racing. Motorsport had started 30 years earlier and, although it always was a modern car magazine, not a vintage/classic car publication, at the time, in the 1950s, it had a huge interest and comitment to vintage cars. I think Motorsport went on in this way right up to the 1970s. [NB. The (only) reason I happen to know this, is that I'm doing an anorakish exercise at the moment, skimming 1950s issues up to 1961, looking for TR rally reports, photos, and ads. I also think a list of names of drivers might be helpful to our Registrar, but perhaps not. Might help to trace early competition histories]. DavidBee
Oh, I missed the second one! Car's coming into a left hander. Tonneau, huge exhaust, looks more than a 2-inch TR2 pipe, and taped lights! Quite the biz!!
