Patrick Brady
I am fitting a new fuel pump (from the TR Shop). The leaflet shows an insulator with gasket either side. I assume an insulator as for the carbs. My Autobook manual (1969) by Kenneth Ball says to refit "not forgetting the packers".The Haynes manual (1986) says remove pump "with gasket and Packing pieces". Nothing found in Moss catalogue, the Complete Official (USA) manual, Technicalities or this Forum. I don't remember any packing when removing the pump, years ago.I remember seeing a letter in TRaction but can't find it. Is any adjustment or packing/insulation needed? Pat. peejay4A
No insulator on mine. Just a paper washer and a thin rubber one.
Patrick Brady
Thanks Pete, for the prompt reply. I may get more comments, and will expect them to be similar. Pat.
RogerH
Hi Patrick, no extra packing other than the plain gasket on my 4A ad 4. Roger
peejay4A
I should have said Patrick that the rubber gasket is supplied by Dave Davies as part of his refurbishment. The paper one goes on the cylinder block face and the rubber one, which conforms to the operating lever, to the pump flange. I think it's there to reduce the possibility of oil splash from the sump finding its way past the pump operating shaft and onto the garage floor. Patrick Brady
Thanks, Roger, for your confirmation of no packing/insulation. Pete, I guess the rubber one shouldn't be needed on a new pump. Also not a bad thing to have oil getting to the lever fulcrum. Would Dave Davies want my old pump for parts? I think it must be an original model, in use about 10 years. It should be OK - I just decided a new one was worth fitting. This was my first use of the Forum, so thanks again for the support. Pat. RogerH
Hi Patrick, if you have the rubber gasket fit it. As for the future - Refurb'd 'old' original parts are usually better than most repro's. Don;t throw any parts away - you will want them one day. Roger
peejay4A
Get Dave to refurbish your old one and keep it as a spare. The repro new ones aren't bad but not up to original quality.
Patrick Brady
OK - good advice re getting the pump restored, but how do I contact Dave Davies? I searched and found a forum post by Spillman/John, who was also wanting to contact Dave. A reply showed photos by Don H. of a restored pump - one showing the rubber gasket. It makes sense now. Does Dave supply these? Pat.
Alec Pringle
Hi Pat, new TR fuel pumps tend not to last very long, waste of time and money to my way of thinking. Keep your old AC pump and have it rebuilt, you'll be needing it soon enough.. to avoid Dave's phone being logged by webcrawlers and bombarded with spam callers . . . . It's 891447, but that has to be prefaced by the Wigan area code. Dave usually charges £55 inc return P&P, and the end result works as well or better than original. He has just returned the pump for my Super Snipe, beautiful job and with an external finish that is simply nicely cleaned up and looking like it dates back to 1958, which it does . . . . . as opposed to bulled and spivved to within an inch of its life. Excellent bloke is Dave, one of the best. He's also a specialist in obsolete OE spec bearings for our sort of cars.
