Removing rear light clusters

Recommended Posts

Apologies in advance chaps for asking yet another (probably) stupid question...

I'm looking to take off my rear light clusters to enable a thorough clean.

Don't want to bite off more than I can chew, and wondered how difficult a job is it?

Are the reflectors etc indeed removable once they're off the car?

Thanks for that Peter. It does to a certain extent, but I'm wary of the potential 'frailty' of 40 odd year old plastic.

Will only tackle this if/ when I'm confident it's a fairly routine task. I've seen images of the various bits of lenses in domestic dishwashers.

Their wives were obviously out shopping at the time.

Some pictures of the assemblies here. They might help to visualize how they come apart.

The screen-washer bottle also benefits from a run through the dishwasher at the same time! As a suggestion you should also allow for a set of replacement lamp gaskets for when you re-fit as no doubt the ones in the car are probably past their best unless replaced recently.

  • 1 year later...

So.... ive just take the rear lights off for a good clean

They seem to be in reasonably good condition

I plan to remove most of the gunge that seems to have been applied to seal the gaskets, then into the dishwasher!

What sort of temp/program is recommended??

I shall include the screenwash and overflow bottles, anything else ??

Once clean im going to address the dodgy earthing and reinstall

I did mine last year and just used some degreaser and then a bucket of warm soapy water ( have a dishwasher but have no need of it or knowledge of how it works) they came up a treat.

I would not use the standard washing machine tablets, look what happens to aluminium if put in the dishwasher.

The alloy (zamak?) of which the body is made may not like that.

I would use a bucket (or the sink) with hot water with a good detergent.

Waldi

Well the dishwasher did ok!

I went for a gentle glass wash and am impressed with the results.

Will give the metal a bit of a polish, new gaskets, look like newish !

Has anyone found replacement bulb holders that work reliably?, or shall i solder up the old ones??

Hi Steve

I used the dishwasher for the rear light lenss about 4-5 years ago and one of my reversing light lens went a light blue colour.

I see it turned out alright, good result. Maybe I had mine too hot.

Inspired by the Bullfire page ive added new earths this morning to all the old light fittings!

In testing they all work nicely with the new earths, whereas many do not work reliably with the old earths, so that a tesult in my book

My approach was to clean and tin the copper on the lampholder, and i found that solderable lucar spade connectors fitted nicely, so i wired those in and soldered in place, adding a cable tie for strain relief.

Not a bad job for a rainy 8am !

Hopefully this is an end to dodgy rear lights due to earthing!

Im installing a marine earth bus in the boot to provide solid 0v to the fuel pump, lights etc.

Pics of that at the weekend maybe :-)
