Dave Ashworth
The above is a line from one of John Cooper-Clarke's early work. Strange as it may seem, I shared a bedroom with him and our girlfriends not long before fame took him away. A clever lad. Anyway, to Tyre business... I need some new tyres for my TR5. It's on wire wheels, not sure what 'J' they are but seem to measure almost 7 inches rim to rim? They currently have 165 15 tyres on them. Could anyone please recommend the following? 1. A good tyre for normal road use. 2. A place to get them from. Thanks for your help. Dave. Edited January 19, 2017 by Dave Ashworth
openroad
Never let your knackers be tired Dave !!!! I am on Michelin XAS, 165's, great original tyre, but not cheap. See you soon, Conrad. Edited January 19, 2017 by openroad
Hamish
I put vredestein classic sprint 165 x 15 on my last car. Daimler SP250. Great tyres. Bought from oponeo delivered to and fitted by local tyre place. Good service
John Morrison
Dave sure they are 7inch? Wheels are measured inside the flanges, not the absolute width. John. Edited January 19, 2017 by john
Dave Ashworth
Thanks John, They don't look like 7 inch wheels, more like 5.5J standard wheels. I'll measure the inside flange tomorrow, thanks. Dave.
WWT338J
These guys http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/ They have cornered the market on vintage tyres. They will fit them and balance the wheels properly if you are willing to travel. David
Alec Pringle
Hardly cornered the market when it comes to tyres for cars of the 50s, 60s and 70s . . . . . far from it ! Vintage Tyre Supplies, Classic Tyres, Blockley Tyre, North Hants Tyres, Micheldever, and a fair few others who specialise in classic rubber to a greater or lesser degree . . . . . Major online suppliers such as Camskill, Black Circles and MyTyres all stock a variable range of classic tyres. Most local tyre wholesalers are able to obtain the major brands of classic tyre given a few days' notice. Cheers Alec

A good period tyre don't get me wrong. But also not the only tyre out there. You can see above what I went for when I needed 5 for the SP250. I'd do the same again when I need new boots for my TR H Edited January 21, 2017 by Hamish
RogerH
Hi Hamish, the Vredsteins work well on the 4A also. Roger
Stanpartmanpartwolf
J C-C now collaborates semi-successfully with Hugh Cornwell- they played J Holland's last Hootenanny. Am I allowed to mention the finest J C-C title: "Tw@t"?
pfenlon
Just had a word with J C C Dave, he said that in Salford they can buy part worn tyres from £16 to way up to £28. Now before all the doom and gloomer's, fall over the old barge pole , wouldn't, and touch it quotes. the Tyre laws in other countries are much stricter than our own, thats why we are able to buy them. Some of these tyres are undoubtably excellent, and some not. You are very unlikely to buy a set of 4, but a good pair are not hard to find. A thorough inspection is suggested, even mandatory. Cyanide Sids is a good place to start, or Juicy Lucy's on Regent road………………………she usually has a good pair in stock.
