clutch bleeding

Recommended Posts

Happy new year all..

Few weeks ago i replaced my clutch slave cylinder and flexi pipe, then bought the gunson kit.. Noticed when bleeding the copper pipe wasnt sealing so replaced that..then put new rubbers in clutch master cylinder.. Bleed with gunson kit using 10psi from spare tyre, and got some air out system but thats it.. And there isnt even a bit of clutch pedal..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advanced grant.

I has all this going on in the summer.

Where the flexi joins the slave there should be a copper washer. This had been left out by the "specialist" and the clutch would not bleed. I ordered a new flexi and had my original slave relined by Past Parts

The new flexi came with an adapter. There was already one on the car at the pipe end so I used the new adapter instead of the copper washer and it has been fine and easy to bleed.

The adapter has a proper machined face as in the rest of the hydraulic system.

It worked well for me.

Happy New Year, Richard & H

Hi Grant,

I do not think that your problem is copper washers.

A couple of years ago at CLM 2008 I helped repair somebodies failed seals in a TR6 clutch slave cylinder.

Changing the seals was not a problem. However getting the system bled was very difficult.

In the end I removed all the piping from the master cylinder and bent it upwards to allow the air to rise out whilst putting fluid intpo the pipe down to the slave.

The pipe was then re-attached. The MC then proved difficult. It took ages to get fluid out of the MC.

Forcing fluid up from the slave may be a better bet.

As has been said, make sure the slave cylinder flange is at the back of the plate it fits to, and bleed nipple at the top, does the slave cylinder actually do anything when you press the pedal? Else your problem might not be hydraulic at all...(I'd get the missus to press the pedal sooner than look underneath...)

Grant,

When you replaced the seals in the M/C are you confident they went in correctly? A seal fitted the wrong way round will never work.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Bought a new clutch slave cylinder from the TR shop. After fitting and a couple of attempts at bleeding the system, both using the traditional method and Ezy bleed, still could not get a clutch.

Having laid under the car studying the slave cylinder it became obvious what was wrong. The cylinder as supplied when fitted to the mounting bracket, had both the inlet and the bleed nipple in the horizontal position. No other way to fit it!. So when bleeding a small amount of air will stay in the top of the cylinder.

The solution was to remove the fixing bolts, temporarily rotated the cylinder 90 degrees so that the bleed nipple was at the top, and fix with a clamp. Re-bled the clutch using Ezi bleed, and eh presto a clutch. I then just removed the clamp and rebolted to original position.

Question: Is this another case of suppliers selling stuff not as original, or was the original cylinders manufactured like this??

Cheers

Rich

Hi Rich,

that doesn't sound right.

The mos Web Cat isn't too clear but shows the bleed nipple at the 12-o-clock position http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/triumph/tr5-6/clutch-transmission-drivetrain/clutch-systems/clutch-system.html

Are your attachment holes on the slave at apprx 10 & 4-o-clock position.

Have you spoken to TRShop of the problem?

Hi Roger,

Yes the fixing position in the mounting plate, which is original, are at 10 and 2. Fixed in this position both the in and bleed are horizontal. The Moss catalougue does seem to show in and bleed vertical. Checked with an original fitted to a friends TR6 and the TR Shop one is wrong.

Bit reluctant to complain to TR Shop as I have now solved the problem of bleeding.

I did previously mention to the TR Shop that the metal work on front lights that I purchased from them was lethal as the metal edges had not been deburred and I cut my finger when installing them. I also had to bring to their attention that the Boot Lining Kit that I purchased had two left hand rear pieces and the carpet set was missing the foot well pieces (opened package). Although they supplied the missimg parts, I got abuse for being a 'serial complainer' "nobody else has had a problem"senario. This after spending over £2000, so wont be using them again.

Cheers

Rich
