The Paris-Prague Rally 2017

Recommended Posts

Hi from Linz (that's Austria to the uninitiated ????). We had a much better day today finally getting the hang of regularities ????????. Navigator is sh*t hot but she does shout a lot! All was going well until lunch on Tuesday when we filled up with some duff fuel this issue continued in to Wednesday morning and we got a cricket score. Temperature remains high but car is performing really well in the heat. Now we are back on BP's finest all is well and the car didn't miss a beat today.

Liddell's TR4 is still leading with the Walsh's TR5 in 9th place and Wenman's TR2 is in 16th and we are 22nd place at the moment.

Looking forward to tomorrow when we enter unknown territory in the Czech Republic. Try and keep you posted ????

Had great fun today a mix of regularities (or irregularities in our case) and auto solos. Geoffrey (the car)thinks he is chittychitty bang bang and was airborne for about 10 meters after we took off at a level crossing at about 60 mph. He landed with such force that one of his eyes popped out of his head. He is now sporting a black eye as it is secured in place with insulating tape ????????. Think of Ferris Bueller's Day off when the garage mechanics borrow the Ferrari! We also had our first wet regularity which was entertaining!!

We had a magical time! It was everything I could have wished for and more, thank you so much Ben for such a special adventure. The Rally Round team were fantastic. Great organisation, friendly and helpful marshals and mechanics and very encouraging to Rally newbies.

We did a total of 2650 miles and the car was just great. The vapourisation issues we suffered on day two were are own fault for putting the wrong fuel in, an easy mistake when there were two nozzles at the pump, one saying' Eco95' and the other 'Super'. We just assumed that the Super would be 98 Octane, but it was only as we were pulling away from the fuel station that I noticed '95' in very small letters on the pump. We added some octane booster, but even still, the car hated it. Lesson learned, and after that we made sure that we only refueled at BP (ultimate) or Shell (Vpower) and the car was as happy as larry. I am so impressed at just how tough the little car is (especially after our taking off incident!!). Mike Barker, the PO who had the car for 30 years and did many Rallies with it had certainly built a very strong car.

It was a great event for the TRs: Many congratulations to the overall winners David Liddell and Mark I'Anson in their superbly prepared 1962 TR4. They were a formidable team and lead throughout from day one, finishing on a spectacularly low score of 95 penalties.

Congratulations also to John and Nicola Walsh who finished 4th overall and 1st in class in their beautiful 1968 TR5 ("Norman" - see post 42!). Nicola and I also shared the 'Best Period Dress' prize which was nice (after all, if you are going to be stuck on the side of the road with fuel issues, you might as well do it in style!:lol: ).

The ex-works Coupes des Alpes winning 1954 TR2 of David Wenman and Jeff Robinson finished in 15th, also on a good score. Our 1957 TR3 was 18th, albeit with a handsome cricket score, but what the heck....we had fun!! There were 32 starters and 25 finished.

Some of the other competitors were totally bonkers, so we felt quite at home and there were some seriously impressive, beautiful cars taking part. Many of the cars (and teams) had a good sporting history and it was lovely to see these cars in action. We learned so much. Following John and Catherine Harrison's 100 year old La France Roadster down some steep mountain passes was a sight to behold. Designed with only rear brakes and with a 14.5 litre engine, it must have taken some stopping (and steering!), and it was amazing to watch John drive the car with such expertise.

I have to admit that being overtaken by push bikes as we were doing 50mph down the mountains was somewhat disconcerting :o . Luckily we were somewhat faster than them on the ascents!!

Geoffrey is now back in the utility room, resting his little wheels until our next trip to the IWE. Looking forward to seeing you there :)

Great write-up, Vicky!!

It sounds like an excellent adventure - well done to you both. TR's are tough cars that can drive over just about anything and can do huge mileages quite happily too :) .

If you haven't already, you should think about sending a full report to Wayne for TRAction. I have no doubt that everyone would enjoy reading about it.

Cheers,

Tim
