Ericthelightweight
I get quite a severe rattle / vibration in the gear lever when under power in 2nd & 3rd gear (1960 3a) This doesn't go away if I put my hand on the knob (please - this isn't a Carry On script...) so it doesn't seem to be related to play. No vibration in 4th. Applies whether or not the overdrive is engaged. Any thoughts on the cause anyone? If you don't mind I'd prefer a diagnosis which involves a cheap and easy solution.... Paul Harvey
If the rattle is in the gear lever, how can it 'not go away' when you hold that lever?
Ericthelightweight
Because it's coming from somewhere in the box, via the selector forks. And maybe rattle is the wrong word as I can't damp it out by holding the lever. It feels like some kind of mechanical 'clicking' related to input shaft speed. I don't notice it under light load, but if I give it the beans it becomes quite intrusive.
RogerH
Hi Keith, could it be simply engine vibration running through all the bits. Have a look at the front and rear mounts - they may have gone soft over the years (back to the carry script) Roger
Lebro
How old is the engine ? A rattling gear lever is one of the symptoms of worn main bearings. Bob.
Don H.
There were a number of in-period S-T service bulletins around vibration in wet-liner gear levers. Anti rattle springs, stabilizing straps, and later damping counterbalance masses were upgraded or implemented. I'd start simple. The spring under the shift lever is in place and up to the task, yes? The rubber-bonded engine and gearbox mounts are OK, yes? The U-joints are in good condition, yes?
