Xmas6
Hi all I`m installing electric power steering on my `6 and am wondering why there is a flexible coupling between the upper and lower coloumn - is this a Triumph cost saving method or is there a technical reason why a universal joint couldn`t be used? Any thoughts? Cheers Neil
peejay4A
It's there to reduce shocks transmitted to the steering wheel. Replacing it with a uj like the one at the rack end is a known mod. Apparently a Ford Escort uj is even better.

boxofbits
Hello Neil, I would be grateful for any pics and details of your electric installation, it sounds very interesting. My Punto has electric steering which is perfect. I had electrically assisted steering on a Type R Honda going back to 2004. I didn't really like it when compared to hydraulic. You could feel the motor cutting in when you turned the wheel which was slightly delayed, but at other times it seemed to over react, but again at the centre point appeared to be a bit dead when turned very slightly. Maybe they've improved since.
Xmas6
Hi Pete I'm installing it on my "bare"car and taking 'photos of the process and I'll do a post when it's done Cheers Neil
Lebro
Our Fiat Seicento has electric Power steering, as with the Honda above it feels a bit odd, not as good as hydraulic. no real self centering when almost centered. (bit like the TR !) Having said that I am now used to it. Bob. Edited June 26, 2016 by Lebro
ianc
Harry Dent installed power steering on his TR5 several years ago, and he remains pleased with the result. I believe the supplier will be at Lincoln. Ian Cornish
barkerwilliams
Neil, I have hydraulic power steering on my TR6. My column has a shaft coupling only, there is no rubber donut. There are no vibrations, shocks etc on the steering wheel. It feels just like a modern car's steering. Alan
trevor
Punto electric steering is a popular system , I know MR2 Mk1 owners often use it.
