Tool Chest Drawer Boxes

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Acquired a couple of tool cabinets this week and am desperately trying to find a supplier of boxes to fit the drawers. I thought this would be easy, however I can't find anything in the UK. This is what I'm after,

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Search Halfords for empty tool trays.

They used to sell kits of high density foam for you to design your ow n layout, but maybe out of stock.

And they also sell empty trays for tool sets.

Or else try Euroslide.

Does Costco in the UK have these? They're pretty useful -- I have several sets in my workshop.

$32.99 for two of the three-slot drawer inserts and two of the ten-slot inserts. A very good deal for these US-made Ernst tray compartments.

Well, those trays have gone out of stock and disappeared from the Costco.com website since yesterday. Pity -- I was going to order another set or two!

I've never looked at those HF trays, Stan. I usually hold my nose and get in and out as quickly as I can, buying only whatever disposable tool I need for a job.

They're noted as being made from polystyrene -- not the most solvent-resistant or strong plastic out there. They're likely thermoformed, too (although I'd need to check). The Ernst ones that I hope will come back at Costco are injection molded from, I think, polypropylene. A better engineering choice, IMO. The Ernst trays are only 1 1/2 inches deep, so they'll fit in a wider range of drawers than the 2 3/8 inch HF trays.

Some of those Ernst trays are available on Amazon.com. Nowhere near as good as deal as when Costco.com had them, though.

Bott looks very nice. Lista is part of Stanley-Black & Decker, and might be the highest quality workshop cabinets in the US. I regularly run Craigslist searches hoping to score some good secondhand Lista. Haven't scored yet...

Ernst, the maker of those injection molded red drawers in my posts above, is the primary manufacturer, AFAIK. The could quite likely do third party manufacturing for other companies, like Bott.

  • 2 months later...

I installed an Ernst Drawer Divider System of rails on one of the drawers of the garage toolbox as an experiment. Haven't lived with it yet, but so far it seems to be doing a good job.

The kit was for what I guess is some standard drawer size that my 'box doesn't exactly match. I had to cut each rail and divider, and figure out how much needed to come off and fit up with the corner brackets and clips for the drawer size (the instructions, while otherwise good, didn't explain how to shorten anything). Not too hard. I wish they'd not made the choice for me about the small dividers. They're almost too small for how I wanted to lay out the drawer. One has gone unused as a result. I'd have preferred a longer length that I could cut to preference.

For the money, it seems to be an OK system. Reasonably flexible and the ABS extrusions appear heavy enough to last.

For something a little more premade Halfords do the following, inexpensive enough to consider cutting to change shape if needed.

Easy and cheap, multiple sizes put lids on or leave off, I must have a couple of hundred with small parts, nuts, bolts, etc etc etc, and apart from going in drawers they will self stack on each other.

This was just a sample item, that works out at 16p each for a hundred, if you can be assed to search harder you will find them at half that price.
