IANAREA
Hi Fellas. Any got any advice on changing lever type shock absorber to telescopic? Big price difference …. is it worth it? Thanks Ian
foster461
Ian, I think the consensus is that there is nothing to be gained from replacing properly working lever arms with telescopic. In some cases like the IRS cars the conversion creates more problems than it solves especially with the simple bolt on brackets. Stan
niklas
I have done this conversion with a TR3a. Note that this is a late model (post TS60000). The early models do have an issue, as there is too little space to fit the brackets. Also there is a risk of the live axle tubes coming free of the differential housing as the brackets of the shocks are welded to them. After all I would have also preferred to stay with the stock lever arm shocks.
TS27004
I wouldn't do it, how old is your chassis? Telescopic shocks, their mounting brackets can apply too much stress when in use on an 6 decades old steel chassis. I use top quality original lever-arm shocks with 20% extra compression (+ quality links) & my 3A handles the way she should handle = comfortable on long distance driving when fully loaded. Note; with 20% stronger rear springs fitted too!
