TR2 TR3 Boot Lid Side Drip Channels

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Had a good day today working on the rear end of my TR2 restoration.

One of my problems was that the side drip channels were rotted out and I could not find anyone reproducing them.

Set about recreating from what I had and made up templates & formers to produce my own.

V pleased with outcome but just wondered if any other members would be interested in these before I lose the templates & formers.

I have made these over length at 55cm so can be cut to size. Also undrilled for wing fixing so could be used as a repair piece.

The up stand at the wing edge is also around 2mm higher than my sample to take into account corrosion etc but will just need a sand off to fit flush.

They were originally a 2 piece construction which I have copied and spot welded to as close to factory as I could make out. (spot welded not plug welded so no grinding out in the channel necessary)

If any members would like me to reproduce them then PM me. I reckon around 14 quid a side + p&p will cover my costs before I lose the templates!

North Devon Metalcraft make them for me but its not often they get round to doing it so well done Steve, did you remember to put the very slight curve in them and the side angle?

Stuart.

Working from my tatty sample I didn't notice the curve on the first trial Stuart but corrected afterwards once I remembered where I had put my shrinker/stretcher!

I made mine by folding a piece of sheet to form an angle and then fillet welding the third side to form a trough. I fabricated the end pieces by cutting a piece of sheet to form the base and one side and then fillet welded the remaining sides. Not perfect but it's tidy and does the job.

My 1958 TR3A (TS 27489 LO) has the same box-like sheet metal sections for the lip seal around the boot as the earlier TRs. Whilst I was doing my restoration in 1987 to 1990, I obtained new rubber seal strips from Cox & Buckles. I cut the new ones and installed the new seals as that were when I bought my TR3A new in 1958.

There was (is) one strip that goes across the top of the opening and the second piece goes down one side, then at the right angle bottom corner, the same piece is folded and goes along the bottom to the opposite right angle corner and then back up to the top corner.

I never glued the new rubber seal pieces into to groove and it has never leaked. It is easy to pull out and clean the road dust etc, out of the groove.

Don

Thanks for the pics.

I am looking particularly at the corners at the front of the aperture I.E at the rear scuttle.

Yours is the same as my TR2.

As there was virtually no rear to my car I have been studying as many pics as I can find.

I am sure I have seen cars where the front corner has a larger ,curved, radius and just thought that would be 3A.

Obviously wrong but was there a change at some point?

Cheers

Steve

Thanks Ian

I was sure I had seen a different layout.

I'm learning!

Steve - The big change happened at TS 60000 where the "corners" are rounded in the boot lid and the seal is different too.

Here are some more photos of mine which might help you. The trough is open at the top corners so that any rain-water that gets into the top can turn the top corners, run to the bottom and out the drain hole.
