matttnz
What about keeping it as an I6? Either the original triumph lump +/- fuel injection or a modern? There's a v nice BMW TR6 out there on the interwebs. For some reason the 6 just appeals...

Motorsport Mickey
Welcome to the forum Johnny, reading your prose we detect it's full of "furringers" exclamations and the photos show a left hand drive TR6 and "your girls" preference for a Rambler likely means it's across a large expanse of water, you've not yet completed your profile or other helpful info but exactly where in the world do you reside ? It may make a world of difference to any suggestions we can come up with. Mick Richards
TriumphV8
V8 is what Triumph might have done ex works if they would not have been in war with the other daughter companies. So we had to wait until the TR8 to see that marriage of love between a Triumph & V8. I have both TR6 in use, a modified straight six and the V8 and they both make a lot of fun, but the V8 with its easy power performing at any rev and the power beyond each expectation of a straight 6 driver is someting special. The major problem when fitting is the steering rack and place for the exhaust manifolds. The top must be cleared because SU and Efi is too tall. I would swap the engine with LT77 or better R380 Rover gearbox or take the Tremec T5. That avoids a lot of problems with the OD gearbox. Without OD driving is impossible. I am using the V8 in my TR6 for 30 years and its simply a perfect combination. It was more than 20 times in Italy, Austria and Switzerland and also performed nicely on the Nürburgring. Street holding is improved beause engine is lighter and understeer reduced and car likes more to enter the curves.

kcsun
You want an LS2 engine mated to the Tremec, LS2's are bullet proof and all the bits readily available. remember the Tremec has 5th gear issues but they can be easily sorted There is at least two TR6's in US of A with LS2's The car will then have the greatest soundtrack EVER KC
OAF939M
I sold an MGBGT V8 before I bought the TR6. The car although in excellent condition, was rubbish handling and the engine less pleasing than the TR,I only have 136BHP on the TR, but it seems to drive much better than the MG ,obviously the cars are different but the TR engine pulls like a train. The TR sounds so much better, nothing sounds as good as an on song 6 Edited December 21, 2015 by OAF939M

TriumphV8
There are many different engine versions of the ROVER V8 availiable. They all run different and may be in a different state of tuning. Main difference is caused by the inlet system. Besides the fact that the engine simply does not fit into the engine compartment they often provide more or less working solutions for avoiding air pollution. Unfortunately they often work opposite in these days. I would recommend to start with a Holley 390 or the Edelbrock 500 carb or if somebody wants it perfect with an Efi like MegaSquirt. The stock fuel injection is rubbish as the carbs with included dashpots are ready for the bin! So if somebody claims that this engine does not perform exceptionell perfect there must be a reason in a wrong setup because the engine is much lighter than the engine sitting under the bonnet before and gives a much bigger displacement at that size that helps best to make a nice performing engine. I know of an LS1 in Calvin's blue one, but no LS2s in 6s. You have any links? And OP if you didn't yet and are set on the BOPR lump, the T5 is the way to go. A T6 is too big, trust me. D&D sell a bell housing adapter plate that'll sort you right out. The only thing you might want to watch is that WC transmissions are getting expensive and hard to find.
