AlexB
If when your annual road tax is due, the DVLA identify on your renewal form that the sum owing is "zero", then they have I believe already recorded/registered that the car is in the "historic" bracket. It's also shown on Section 4 of your V5C where the words "Historic Vehicle" will be shown.
AlexB
Sorry...continuation... but the question as to whether one must "apply" (in writing ?) to DVLA to change to black/white plates is a valid one. I don't know the answer to that.
Denis
I had a mate who always fitted Black n Silver plates to his new cars, and carried the reflective ones in his boot, when the Police stopped him he would just show the ones in the boot and say he would change them over, but he never did! I changed mine on my TR to black & silver not for vanity, but to make it period correct.
Guest ntc
Hi Stuart You are spot on. BLACK PLATE WITH WHITE, SILVER OR LIGHT GREY DIGITS:- These may only be displayed on vehicles manufactured prior to 1st January 1976. Assuming ones car passed the DVS entry to Jersey test! I Think TR6 look better with Black and a White / Grey Number plates. Above or in front of the bumper at the front, of course. Who would be stupid enough to block the air intake to the engine. The TR 6,was designed for the USA they don't have front number plates, methinks. Me It protects the rad and makes no difference to air flow
peejay4A
The TR 6,was designed for the USA they don't have front number plates, methinks. Was it really? Some States don't mandate front plates, not all.
Don H.
...The TR 6,was designed for the USA they don't have front number plates, methinks. Most US states do require a front license plate. There are a good number that don't, though, so the rule is broken almost as often as not. And even some of the ones that do require a front plate, like my current state, have situations where the rules change, like the 1962-year-of-manufacture plate displayed on the rear of my car. https://www.cars.com/articles/2013/10/how-many-states-require-front-license-plates/
cubehopper
I have replaced my reflective number plates on my May 73 TR6 with black and silver plates, not because of vanity ,although I do accept I am now more handsome and attractive to the ladies ,but because its what I want to do with my car. Some people fit MX5 seats, minilite wheels etc,if it makes you happy then do it. Dave

Bill944T
I have replaced my reflective number plates on my May 73 TR6 with black and silver plates, not because of vanity ,although I do accept I am now more handsome and attractive to the ladies ,but because its what I want to do with my car. Some people fit MX5 seats, minilite wheels etc,if it makes you happy then do it Whilst the fitment of different seats or wheels was not illegal at the time on a May 73 car, the point I've made is that the fitment of black/silver plates was, so the perpetration of this due to "relaxation", I still consider to be vanity Whilst a teenager in the 70's, I only ever wanted an E type, Lotus Elan or TR6 for the simple reason these cars never had a "base" version unlike my friends who had their base Minis or Escorts that had been made to look like the Coopers or Mexicos of the day. Hence my latter purchase of the 944T rather than a 911 as these too tend to be blinged up, which brings me back on topic Regards Bill
cubehopper
Bill ,do you not consider adding 944T to your user name vanity. ,you could have added anything, are we all supposed to be impressed. DaveTR6
Bill944T
Bill ,do you not consider adding 944T to your user name vanity. , you could have added anything ,are we all supposed to be impressed? Hardly, considering at £7500 to myself following heart surgery (and could have suggested a Volvo), quite a lot less than the value of most TR6s on here Avatars with BMWs, Audis etc appear to have escaped similiar comment. Should I have a less impressive avatar with: past: Daf Daffodil, Mini Van, MGB V8 transplant, TR6, Transits, Simca 1100, Viva, C15, Astra, and current: TR6 (same one), 300 tdi, 206, unused TR6 Heritage shell, 944T instead? peejay4A
I suppose that fitting historically incorrect plates isn't that much different to fitting MX5 seats but they still look strange to my eye.
