marki
Evening. I know it's come up before but am I right in thinking EP gear oil is now not a good idea for boxes ? After a quick search I've come up with this. What do the experts think ? Cheers Mark
rhine
Just filled diff and gearbox with A type overdrive on '69 CP with GL4 spec oil
RogerH
Hi Mark, that oil is the correct type - GL4 - but is quite thick SAE110. Why not go for a Penrite 40 gearbox oil. Or perhaps slightly thicker. Roger
Kevo_6
Hi Mark I use Penrite GB40 gearbox oil. Especially good for the overdrive.

John Bracher
Is there any proven reasons for this to be better than modern EP oil? Buying some for this winter 'r&r season' too, so will hold off for a bit!
RogerH
Hi John, good response. People put stuff in places because people put stuff in places. Is the gearbox an EP bit of kit - no. They have gears that are happy to mesh and to a degree roll over each other. There is a degree of scuffing. The Diff is a serious EP location. The hypoid gear lacks this rolling effect. Many EP oils are GL5 - not good for the box. GL4 is good. Oil manufacturers spend a fortune on gearbox oils - there may be a clue in this. OK if you need a thicker oil (why?) then use a thicker gearbox oil. Originally the overdrive had warnings about using EP oil. This changed years later by TRiumph - probably to reduce leaks. John Bracher
Roger, would that go some way to expalining a 'sluggish' O/d engagement when cold, improving as oil warms up? Sticky EP oil behaving like grease when cold? looks like another Penrite sale...... (which is a bu**er, as I was in Moss this afternoon, but without 'gearbox oil' in my head!) Mind you, that particular shortfall may also be the cause of so many 'other issues'........
