Brake bits question

Recommended Posts

Gents

I plan to take a look at my brakes in the next month or do

There's nothing amiss, as far as I am aware, just an annual clean and brush up.

But . . . . . on the off chance I find that shoes or pads are needed, do I have to find "TR6" parts, or are there parts designated for other cars, that I can use that fit and are safe?

Thanks

Fiddeling on the brakes is always a risk.

There are many "upgrade parts" from where

I tried the vaccuum pump at the alternator,

the vented discs and the tandem brake booster

and two sorts of EBC brake pads, the yellow and the green.

Also the silicon breake fluid was in use but caused trouble in my car.

The green EBC brake pads, although they do not

have a registration number, seem to be the only nice upgrade

of the brakes after having trouble with squeaking and fading

that I would recommend to a normal mechanic.

Rest should be left to specialists, having some skil with race cars

or other engineering because although being a nice upgrade, too

there is no space for mistakes at the brakes.

Pretty sure the front pads are the same on some other cars, Ford Capri and TVR ? comes to mind. However given that neither the shoes or front pads cost much anyway and wont be any cheaper for the other cars then not worth trying. If however your going for upgraded bits then I'd search the forum as there is a lot of post regarding these. Personally found the EBC pads noisy but worse wooden feel, and standard replacement lacking bite when first pressed. I'm probably going to change mine to Mintex or something similar.

Mintex or hawk pads seem to be the most commonly recommended.

Have a search and then decide which you fancy, bear in mind that each manufacturer make pads with different compounds.

Found mintex very good. Bite well and in a progressive fashion.

The driver for the question was not cost, but availability, I would want to buy a well known brand.

If, when I look at the brakes, it would be nice to be able to go to my local motor factor and pick up the parts in a few minutes, rather than have to mail order or drive 60 or 70 mikes (each way), to find them.

I have stripped and refitted brakes on minis, Fords and Peugeots, so have some experience of what us required

It was a question related to design.

Are there any other vehicles, which are still common and for which parts are still readily available, thst have identical pads / shoes to the TR6?

I found the best 'upgrade' for £££ value (IMHO) was slotted discs and Mintex 1144 'fast road/racing' pads.

The brakes on my '74 model are now (pretty much) like a more modern car, with a good 'dragdown' of the MPH and no fade when the pedal is held 'down hard' in the event of 'needing it' when pushing along.

They also seem to work well at low speeds without issue/noise/snatching/deadness, as many of the 'performance' pads seem to??

The pad pattern is used on loads of similar aged cars, and from memory the pattern number is MGB633 (or similar)

Camskill usually offer the Mintex 1144 'racing' pads, but somebody must have an idea on where else this compound/pattern can be obtained???

Check Metric vs Imperial calipers for pin size tho!

I may refurb the servo/master cyl this winter, for (mainly) cosmetic reasons, but that is a side issue!!
