Fireman049
Today when I switched on the ignition the overdrive kicked in even though the gearlever was in neutral! She was OK yesterday. Could this be caused by a defective relay switch? Selecting fourth gear and operating the overdrive toggle switch has no effect. Tom.
ctc77965o
Yep, must be the relay. Those Lucas 6RA type relays don't go on forever...be sure to replace with one with the same ~5figure number on it...all 6RAs are not the same...Or upgrade to a Bosch cube. Fireman049
Thank you ctc ~ Tom.
Guest ntc
Tom The overdrive is finding earth from somewhere .
RogerH
If the relay went dead then it wouldn;t work. Going dead in the 'ON' condition would only happen if the contacts got welded together - quite rare. As Neil suggests look for a dodgy earth leak path Roger
RobH
Tom - if it is a stray earth it must be on the coil side of the relay not the contacts/OD solenoid side. The relay coil is fed directly from the supply to terminal W1 and the OD switch and interlocks go from the coil terminal W2 to earth, so a short to earth on that line will pull the relay in permanently. Fireman049
Thank you Neil, Roger and Rob ~ I'll check everything tomorrow. Tom.
Guest ntc
Tom As usual and I always say it ( if it was working ok then check the last thing you did)
Fireman049
Will do Neil ~ Thanks. The last thing I did was to test the headlamp wiring. The lamps have not been fitted yet. Tom.
Fireman049
I have a spare 'cube' relay. The terminals are numbered 30 85 86 87. How do I connect them from the existing W1 W2 etc? Tom.
RogerH
Hi Tom, the lucas relay will be marked W1 (coil 12v input) (85) W2 (coil output to earth) (86) C1 (power input) (30) C2 (power to the component) (87) Have a look here and click on the picture. It will get bigger and you can the see the pin wiring. http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/product.php/642/12v-4-blade-relay Roger
