Shudder/vibration in fourth - TR250 O/D

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, some assistance please, what would cause a shuddering/vibration in the drive chain, overdrive reliefs it but you can still feel it in the background, also in you flick the OD in/out quick it seems goes away, its around 50/60 mph, it pulls OK and there is no clunking etc, new drive shaft all fitted and UV's, I'm wondering if its prop, maybe need a packing with more grease, over to you guys please? This a an A type box with O/D.

Typical speed for wheel balance.....

Also the drive shaft is affected because our

shafts are coarse and tend to imbalance when old.

Recommend rebalancing of wheels on the car to catch

also improper drive shafts.

Hi Andreas,

New tyres and wheels fitted and balanced recently, what do you mean improper drive shafts?

The vibration/shuddering (best description I can give verbally) does improve through overdrive although still there, it will come and go dependent on O/D usage, this is both with O/D in and out?

The normal driveshaft expands in the middle and if there is play

it bends sometimes. It is than not straight but a banana.

I had this, driving on the highway and going

from pedal and accelerating again always changed balance

depending how the slider found its position.

With the cv-joints all that was gone.

The normal driveshaft is not balanced ex works and it

was once necessary to add to a balanced wheel 100 grams when

fitted to the rear and balanced at the car with the finishbalancer.

100 grams let you jump in the seat like riding a horse......

Anyway if you have the feeling its more overdrive related there may be

something wrong in the planet area but the gearbox has to come out to check.

So I would first test the wheels at the car, especially because our TR6

do not have a centering in the middle but are centered by the four bolts

what is not that precise and may be a reason for imbalance.

The propshaft gives more a humming because its rotating three times faster

but when vibration is related to the load also a damaged univeral joint may be suspect.
