pjc615ukuk
Hi. Can anybody tell me is the base metal of the rear bumper plate number light fitting, suitable for re chroming, or is it made of 'pig' iron?
Denis
I believe it's made of Zinc, and any kind of plating on Zinc eventually bubbles through! Suggest you ask a Metal Polishing Company.
pjc615ukuk
Thank you Dennis, I thought that that would be the case. Damn...

pjc615ukuk
I have a Jowett Javelin, which suffers the same problem on all the door handles, which I've been told is impossible to re plate. Denis has reminded me what a Jowett Club member called the metal, which as Denis said is indeed Mazak!
Andrew Smith
Mazak is re-plateable - Derby Plating did my TR4A wing markers in the mid-90s and did an excellent job - http://derbyplating.co.uk/ Cheers Andrew Edited May 6, 2015 by Andrew Smith
Paulc
Having mine rechromed with the bumpers at colonnade, they said it's more work to do and quoted £
pjc615ukuk
I've seen one on flea bay for sale, a am still reeling with shock at the price of it! I'll check out derby plating & colonnade now. Thanks guys!
BlueTR3A-5EKT
518030 (item 98) is quoted as under 50 pounds for a new one - why rechrome? http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/triumph/tr5-6/electrical-system/lighting/rear-tail-lamps-interior-lights.html Cheers Peter W
jerrytr5
As an alternative, you could try chrome wrap. Might be worth a go. http://alsacorp.com/strechchrome/ Jerry
pjc615ukuk
Well spotted Peter W. I'll check that out. The one I've seen on flea bay was around £230 and claimed to be NOS but it didn't look it to me...

Denis has reminded me what a Jowett Club member called the metal, which as Denis said is indeed Mazak! No! I said 'Zinc'....whatever Zink or Mazak...are inferior 'Pot Metals' and they oxidise and bubble through the plating, the bubbles burst and leave holes, this requires metal filling before re-plating, and the whole oxidising process will repeat! It's all part of natures way of turning your 'pride n joy' back into earthly deposits!
