Richard71
Has anyone came across this modification before? I've heard of Pi engines suffering in higher altitudes. Was/is this something available from the Pi repairers today I wonder. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRIUMPH-TR5-TR6-2-5PI-LUCAS-MKII-ALTITUDE-CORRECTION-METER-UNIT-/181713813235?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a4efcbef3 Does anyone have any info on the system? Richard.
Peter Cobbold
There was a cable-operated version too, its somewhere in this thread I think: http://www.tr-register.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/48430-tr6-and-high-alpines-passes/?hl=altitude&do=findComment&comment=388450 Peter Edited April 15, 2015 by Peter Cobbold
Richard71
Thanks for the link Peter, educational! Would like to know more about how the Lucas altitude compensator works though if only to satisfy my curiosity. Richard.
Peter Cobbold
Richard, I've never seen one. Not much use for them in UK, maybe they were common on exported PIs? From the photo it looks as if an aneuroid bellows in the added-on part inserts a pin between the fuel cam and the roller at altitude. That pushes the roller and the piston, with its moving stop, back into the MU cylinder. And that reduces the shuttle-stroke volume. Only a guess... Peter I could hazard a guess at who Oilywragg2 is. And he will definitely know how it works ! Edited April 15, 2015 by Peter Cobbold
Richard71
Hi Peter, your theory makes perfect sense. Good to see unusual OEM components for our cars. Richard.
snowric
You can see an altitude correction MU on this Triumph Mk1 PI FHP 993C - modified I understood for the Monte Carlo rally.on this links below: https://plus.google.com/photos/115471290043093657458/albums/5089195134820295057/5089200009608176418?pid=5089200009608176418&oid=115471290043093657458 https://plus.google.com/photos/115471290043093657458/albums/5089195134820295057/5089199519981904562?pid=5089199519981904562&oid=115471290043093657458
snowric
If you look at the boot pictures you can see that they were running the maserati Lucas injection pump and not a standard PI pump - called a bomb type... http://www.mijnwebwinkel.nl/winkel/lapreclassicparts/a-39255191/maserati-parts/lucas-fuel-pump-high-pressure-original/ Snowy
