Has anyone came across this modification before? I've heard of Pi engines suffering in higher altitudes. Was/is this something available from the Pi repairers today I wonder.

Richard, I've never seen one. Not much use for them in UK, maybe they were common on exported PIs?

From the photo it looks as if an aneuroid bellows in the added-on part inserts a pin between the fuel cam and the roller at altitude. That pushes the roller and the piston, with its moving stop, back into the MU cylinder. And that reduces the shuttle-stroke volume. Only a guess...

If you look at the boot pictures you can see that they were running the maserati Lucas injection pump and not a standard PI pump - called a bomb type...
