Calling all side screeners,  I have now put up with a Wobble between 45 anf 60 mph thorough the steering of my trusty old three for the last 4 years and enough is enough.

The works carried out so far are:

Posh bronze drag link bushes, rebuilt steering box, revingtons top sprung box plate, and new idler arm plus of course  balancing of the wires more than once.

I have been advised by my friend Paul that he thinks the culprit is the nearside lower idler arm which he had to have a bush put in the top to remove the play despite replacing the componets.

If you have any thoughts on the mattter it would be appreciated.

Regards

SvS451,

I have not had as much work done on the suspention as you however i have a similar problem. I have just had the wheels balanced which has improved the situation but it is still there around 55 - 60 an annoying speed for it to occur.

Finding anyone who can deal adequately with wires either balancing or fitting tyres is a problem in itself.

Other local members have this problem and we feel it would be a great idea to have a wire wheel specialist and tyre fitter at Malvern. I have put a request in to the office but possibly too late for this year. I think they would get as much business as those doing P.I. tuning these last few years.

What do you - and others think?

For this year I will have to do with a full body massage and manicure (where do they get these ideas!)

I have the same on my 3A on wire wheels. To verify I proceeded by elimination and replaced the wires by KN's and now most of the vibrations are gone.

What is left is the, for sidescreens, typical scuttle shake that occurs when driving on bumpy roads. It goes without saying that this can easily be taken as a wheel wobble, but it's not.

As the wire wheels on my 3A are brand new, 72 spoke and balanced I had no reasons to believe that they would induce any scuttle shake, but they did. When driving on motorway it started at around 55 and continued till 65.

The cure would be to reinforce the scuttle as shown on the britishcarlinks website

see under Tech.Articles - scuttle shake

I could not find anything under that link, it took me to the british car thingy but searching under "scuttle" did not bring anything up. The site did however have annoying add pop-ups.

Mychael - if you go to  >www.tr-register.com.au<  and follow the technical link there are two articles regarding the 'cure' for scuttle shake. I have done the box section and angle iron under the battery box on TS952 as it was all apart. I cannot comment on how it compares on a car without it at the moment as TS952 is not yet on the road (it will be soon!!!). All the best, Nigel

I have the same at speeds between let's say 55 and 80 mph. My wires (MWS with certificate), like Jean's, were brand new 5.5 and 72 spokes. New tires (Goodyear) and balancing did not cure the problem. One thing I have learned, "new" and a QA cerificate is certainly not a guarantee for straight. During the initial balancing we could notice a lot of wheel wobble. At least 4 out of 5 tyres could not be balanced to satisfaction. I am now considering to take the wheels to a wire wheel specialist to check them And of course after I have upgraded the front suspension with new nylatrons and PU bushes and all the other stuff, wheel wobble has only become even more noticable than before. But when buying "brand" new wires I would expect them to be "straight".

My wires were not new and not perfectly true but when I fitted minilites from my other car this did not cure the problem.

I was under the impression that MWS wheels were the best that money could buy, looks as if this is not the case.

I run 60 spoke wires which Im think are correct for 59. Does anyone know the correct offset for a TR3A.  Is MWS motor wheel services or midland wheels services

MWS possibly is the best money can buy, I have no idea. Maybe wheels from other maufacturers have the same problem. Mabe this is inherent to wires. I must admit so far I have not contacted mws for any advise and maybe I should. But when I think about returning wheels from Belgium to the UK, .... .
