Help find your car history

Recommended Posts

When I bought my first TR6 I had a hell of a job trying to track down any history, and the DVLA was less than helpful. So in annoyance, I created a website http://www.wheresmycar.co.uk where people can register and add a history of the cars they've owned. The idea behind it was if people did this then the next owner could search, see what happened to a car they owned, or see the history of a car they own now.

In 2007, using my own site, I ended up speaking with a guy who once owned the MGF I bought (he had become a sort of car dealer picking up trade ins and selling them on ebay, and had put the car on the site in response to seeing an ad I had posted about the site)....and the guy used to work for Practical Classics!!...wish I could remember his name. Even stranger he had responded to a letter I had written that was published in practical classics relating to a problem I had had with my TR6 some 4-5 years earlier. It was the most unbelievable co-incidence. I remember going to his house to see the car and him showing me the ‘Technical Help’ department of the magazine he worked for at the time. He said to me ‘prepared to have your illusions shattered’ and showed me a small room in his house where there were stacks and stacks of Haynes manuals, datasheets, wiring diagrams, photographs and notebooks. So when you write in to a magazine for help...that’s how they find the answer!!

Sorry, I get carried away and excited with nostalgia whenever I think back to my Triumph days….back to the site…

Obviously it only works if people add the history of cars they've owned, but thinking back to when I got my cars (both the first and the second) I wish someone had done this since knowing the history of a car helps with both the buying process and the 'pleasure factor' of knowing the history of your car and even possibly connecting with the previous owner (optional of course).

Of course it's completely free, your personal information is hidden and encrypted and I just thought it would be nice to help people trace the history of their cars, knowing how much I wished I had had this available when I bought my cars.

Also, I am building a section of success stories where people have been able to track down a previously owned car, or managed to find some interesting history about a car they owned (regardless of how you did it). If you have a great story and want me to publish it on the site, please PM me and I'll be glad to do it.
