rudi
Has anybody any experience if the front legs of the chassis will deform under the steering load if the radiator shield is not installed?
marvmul
Rudi I don't think so. This radiator shield is heavy but it's fixed to the chassis with only one bolt on each side, and these bolts press the shield to the chassis legs on a small area only.
rudi
Reason I am asking: I have not re-installed the shield since the last job. During the rally yesterday the following happened: suddenly the lower bolt of the universal joint has touched the engine mounting support. I have the impression that my R&P has moved to one side (that is what I guess at least). The rack itself (bolt on)has not moved over the support as far as I can see. So what really happened is still a mystery to me.
david ferry
Rudi, Do you have a bolted or welded on conversion bracket set for the steering rack to attach to the chassis? Regards David
rudi
it's a bolt on conversion
Don Elliott
You should ask the supplier of your rack and pinion about this. But maybe more important, if you rally your sidescreen TR without this heavy piece, someday you with surely hit a rock in the center of tha road and you will put a hole in the bottom of your radiator. It is there to prevent this. Don Elliott, 1958 TR3A
rudi
You are right Don and thanks for your concern. But I must say that I have a 6mm aluminium rad/sumpguard in place. Rudi
Don Elliott
Rudi - That make it all clear. I approve of your modification. I don't think there would be any deformation of the front end of the frame extending forwards. I assume that the rad/sump plate is secured to the frame which should stiffen the frame and your TRl a bit. I trust it is not secured to the gearbox or other flexibly mounted part. The engine and gearbox still need to be flexible and not restrained by the plate. Don
