new to forum and a question....!

Recommended Posts

Evening Gentlemen...and ladies...

couldnt really find a place to introduce so i thought this maybe the best place for me......!

Hello......!!!! my name is Nick and live in Norfolk and very new to the world of TR infact i dont have one....!!! im in the market for a TR6 and the hunt has been on for a couple of months now, which leads me on to a question

i dont think it has been mentioned on the forum yet but i have seen a lovely TR6 on ebay at a really stupid low price of £5k.... very good condition and from the research i have done should be a £10 - £15k car all day long..

it's a scam of course but i have started a conversation with the assumed seller, and it would be very tempting if i was a little gullable but i'm not.

i just wanted to know if anyone knows the true owner of this car...?

reg: YUB 507J

the alleged owner was a chap that passed away 3 months ago and his brother and his wife are selling it. the car is based in inverness but they are located in spain....?

the last email i got from them was this....:

Let me explain. I do not live in Inverness, we are based in Cadiz, Spain so I can't go there every time someone wants to see it, plus I can't go alone as I am a woman and my husband Ian is unfit to travel. I will get somebody to bring it to you if you decide to buy it but we have to close the deal through eBay. Delivery can be arranged in 2-3 days and you will have the chance to inspect it before I get paid, only if we go through PayPal as well. We will use PayPal - Pay After Delivery which gives you 14 days for the car to be delivered before any funds are released to me. PayPal will securely hold the funds. Please read below about PayPal (Pay after delivery).

https://www.paypal.co.uk/pay-after-delivery-more/

Everything is covered by eBay, they will keep your money secured during the inspection period. This purchase protection guarantees that the car is exactly as I described it; basically, once delivered, you'll have 5-7 days to inspect it and if you decide not to keep it you will get refunded in no time and they will charge me with the return costs. I will get paid only after you confirm that you received the car in good order.

If you like it, let me know your ebay user id, paypal email along with a phone number and your name, address where it must be delivered so i can register the sale with ebay to proceed.

If you will decide to not go through now then is not a problem I still quite have a few more offers from potential buyers. Hopefully, I made myself understood and we will be closing the deal. I look forward to hearing from you soon

Thanks
Emma & Ian McGuire

yeah sure......!!!!!

anyway... the search continues for a car.... i have a fiarly big garage and i'm not afraid of a bit of rot...! i sort of have this romantic idea of doing the full restoration which is possiable... i used to work as a mechnic many years ago...(im 47) i left that to become an electricain so im not afriad of getting my hands dirty... and yes... i do know it can get very expensive...!

so hopefull you will see me around more often asking all the question that have asked before....

all the best

Nick

Hi Nick - welcome to the Forum...

Well spotted in the scam EBay listing... Sadly there are few that crop up from time to time...

There is a wealth of info available on here from the membership... If you haven't already done so become a member of the TRR and go along to your local meetings if convenient... All like minded souls!

Good luck in your hunt!

Cheers

Ian

Hi Nick,

and welcome.

We've discussed this particular scam elsewhere on Forum, the enterprising 'sellers' (I use the term loosely!) had no less than 70 vehicles on offer. Hopefully they didn't manage to ensnare any complete suckers.

If you have the ability, inclination, space and time . . . not to mention funds . . . . there's nothing wrong with a restoration project. Oh yes, and I forgot the most important bit, an understanding 'other half' !

There are enough helpful folks on this Forum to make life a whole lot easier than it was in the days before the internet - whatever the little local difficulty might be, someone somewhere has been there before and found a way round it. And usually they are only too pleased to pass on the knowledge.

As and when you do find something worth looking at, you may well find that the car is already known on here and we can tell you something about it, or alternatively there'll be someone local prepared to have an initial look for you, and maybe save a few hundred miles of frustration . . . .

Cheers

Alec

Hi Nick

welcome to the fold,

Take your time and look at a few cars, the temptation is to rush out and buy the first thing you see, I spent around 12 months looking for mine, i went all over the place only to find a good car on my door step 4 miles away. :D

I can recommended http://www.classicmarks.co.ukspeak to Mark he normally has a few cars in and he is very well known on here and he's not too far from you.

Also go to your next group meeting and have chat there, there will be plenty of good advice to be gained and also i have no doubt that some one will either have car for sale or will be able to go with you to look at a potential car.

Hello Nick, Where in Norfolk are you based?.I ask because there are a couple of places you can try like Clive Manvers in Elmswell,Suffolk and as Martin says classicmarks near Brandon also Suffolk. I am on the Norfolk / Cambs border near Downham Market and have a transporter trailer available if you should need it at all.

Hi Nick,

good bunch of blokes in the Wensum Group, many of them have been around a long time - and they're still of the old-fashioned attitude. Complimentary sense, that is !

East Saxons are a good bunch too, and not that far a drive, worth the trip. No aspersions cast on the Suffolk guys, I hasten to add, but I don't know them as well . . . .

Cheers

The same scammer is trying to sell a 1972 Stag in Inverness for £3700 they even conned the Stag specialist E,J. Ward to post it on their site, but its now removed

1972 Triumph Stag fully restored Item ID: 111516925150

we got this email

Let me explain. Just out of interest and observing that the scam ad makes much of using Paypal for buyer protection, how exactly does the scammer make money?

The answer is here: "if you like it, let me know your ebay user id, paypal email along with a phone number and your name, address where it must be delivered so i can register the sale with ebay to proceed"

The scam has nothing to do with the car in this case. The car is just a catch to collect all the particulars of the potential buyer BEFORE he has the chance to view the car. When the scammer gets all that he could sneak in the ebay and Paypal system of the potential buyer and access bank and CC information. Passwords are easy to break in.

The scammer relies on two things:

1/ The magician trick: Catching and keeping the attention of the buyer on the obvious center of interest (the car) while the trick is elsewhere (the personal details);

2/ The buyer's psychology: By stressing much on the safety of the transaction the scammer is inducing a climate of trust and confidence with the buyer until the buyer buys-in the story and releases his personal details. It's all a bit trivial but it works

There is no, and could not be any, PayPal buyer protection - from the Paypal Buyer Protection terms

" Items Not Covered - Items like real estate, motorised vehicles (of any kind), custom-made items, industrial machinery (for manufacturing), prepaid cards, or items that violate our policies or eBay’s policies, anything you buy in person, or money transfers to friends or family. "

Hi All,

The Paypal 'pay after delivery' option does not cover cross border purchases either...Beware- this scam is quite obvious but some are not and any scam will try and l lull you into a false sense of security.

Regards,

Michael.

Most scams of this nature are scamming dozens of people (or more) at the same time with the same ad. It is a numbers game. Some passwords will yield rapidly enough for them to make their scam work. If the password is too difficult they just stop communicating with you.

I can see how that works in massive volumes like phishing campaigns but it doesn't ring true to me for a relatively low volume scam like this. I'm still not convinced that the route to the cash is through cracking a password.

The scam lies in the fact that for a PAD deal PayPal pay the seller straight away, when the order is placed . . . . . and before the car is 'delivered'.

The buyer's bank account is debited by PayPal 14 days later. Irrevocable.

The buyer doesn't have any buyer protection from PayPal of course as it's a PAD deal involving a motorised vehicle, it's purely a civil dispute between buyer and seller . . . .

Paypal have the buyer's money from his bank account 14 days later - and they've earned a fee for the deal of course.

The seller has already had Paypal's money, less the PP fee.

The buyer is £X K the poorer, and has nothing to show for it but hard-won experience.

It's nothing to do with passwords, that's a red herring suggestion.

Cheers

The December issue of Practical Classics has a good 5 page article about buying a TR6...expect to pay 8 to 10 grand for a decent one.

As the articles says it's the last British Classic that's about to go up in value like the TR5 and the Big Healeys...so dive in now!

Hi Nick,

  • 1 month later...

Well..... Thanks for all the interest.....

Obviously I didn't fall for the scam but they were very very clever, I set up a bogus eBay account and gave them the details of that..play them at their game...... And they sent me a very convincing invoice via ebay with all the logos and legal jargon found on PayPal..... Even withan online chat option.... Which I tried and worked....amazing.... Anyway I finally go bored of playing around with them and owned up and told them I knew about the scam..... And dropped them some info that might hopefully put them off for a bit.... I thanked them for all the info they gave me.... Mobile number several email addresses, eBay ID's, PayPal account information and bank account details and I told them I would pass this all on to my colleges at work.....at Kings Lynn police investigation centre..... Needless to say they disappeared off the radar......! But I'm sure they will be back somewhere else.... So be carful out there......

Anyway on a more happier note....... I now am the proud owner of a lovely 1972 TR6 finished in non standard black....in pretty good condition with quite a lot of work done over the past 5 or so years..... Needs a little welding for next mot and some paintwork needed which I can do step big step.... I took a good friend of mine who has had classics for several years with me down to see mark at classic marks in Brandon.... And what a nice bloke, gave us loads of time today to have a good look over the car which I have ened up buying....deposit paid and hopefully if time allows I will pick it up early in the week.....

Cant wait......!!!!! Like a kid with a new toy

So who's in my area....?.... I believe wensum meet is not that far from me....?

All the best

Nick

Hi Nick,

what permission are you referring to. Is there a warning flag or something popping up.

Otherwise -

click on 'more reply options' bottom right button

Click on 'choose file' bottom left

Find your pic and send

click on 'attach the file' bottom left.

Position cursor where you want the pic on the message.

Click on 'add file' righthand side.

The pic must be smaller than 1,9Mb. 100Kb is plenty big enough.

I think that the Camb Followers meet nearer to you at Barnack on the first Weds.of the month and at Wistow on the third Mon.of the month.

I'm at Outwell, not far from yourself, and will be going to Wistow on Monday the 19th,not in the "6" though, and you're welcome to tag along if you wish. Wistow is near to Ramsey so about 28miles from me, a tad further for you.
