peejay4A
In the Rally section the subheading says this "Historic rally's" That should be "rallies".
AlanT
The standard textbook, in the USA, on machine-shop practice has been called: "Machinery's Handbook" for about 100 years.

Alec Pringle
Wrong . . . . . confused pedant alert John. Machinery is a collective noun. Rally is not . . . . . Cheers Alec
AlanT
I am glad you boys are sorting this out for me. "Machinery's" always looks wrong to me, but they have done it that way forever. I'd be quite happy with "Machinery".
john.r.davies
Collective noun - so what? "Historic Rally's" would be correct, if it were to refer to posts about the rally, or even to Mr.H.Rally and his possessions. Anyway, English is as she is spoke - the most fluid and best language in the world, that has morphed and changed ever since it was invented. Fossilising it by grammatical rules is futile, except when understanding is made more easy - which in this case it is not. That great author and consummate tale teller, Ray Bradbury, entitled one of his collections of stories, "The Machineries of Joy". Simple plural, but anyway. Alec Pringle
Hi John, in the context to which we refer, that of a subheading, " Historic rally's (HERO, CRA events, etc.) " is incorrect. " Historic rallies (HERO, CRA events, etc.) " is the preferred wording. Grammar does matter, incorrect useage leads to misunderstanding . . . . . and in extremis, war ! Cheers Alec
Bodiam
As a fully paid-up pedant, I did enjoy reading a book by Lynne Truss entitled "Eats, Shoots and Leaves", which includes some entertaining examples of misunderstandings caused by incorrect punctuation.
